Hi there,

I'll be on Bonaire for about 3 weeks starting Feb 16th and I'll need to be online for about 5-6 hrs daily.

To this end I'm looking for a reliable ISP on Bonaire.

Reliable as in: available and reasonable speeds whenever internet access is needed (as opposed to: only available after midnight... maybe) :-)

Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

If you have a laptop with WiFi capability, suggest you go to Chat N Browse and talk to Michael Gaynor. With wireless, you can sit outside and work.

Ummm, you are going on vacation, aren't you?

Granted, I haven't been to Bonaire in over a year (that is soon to be remedied) but when there last, a dial-up speed over 28.8 at places like De Tuin and such were a rarity. Technology has been making great advances in Bonaire, but I'm not sure dial-up will be the way to go for connectivity.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a vacation Susan. Let's call it a "change of scenery" :-)

I haven't been to Bonaire for 10 years (sept '94) so your information is definatly more current then mine.

I mentioned dial-up because I think it is probably impossible (unpractical) to get another kind of connection for such a short time.

To this end I've made sure the house I rented has a phone line which I can use.

The laptop is not wifi enabled...yet. If wifi is the solution then it will be wifi enabled two weeks from now though.

Thanks for the input so far!

Martin, if your laptop has a PCMCIA slot, Michael has at least one PCMCIA card he can loan you. He also has an ethernet cable that can reach outside. The beauty of the wireless is that you can sit for hours without tie-ing up the other computers that Michael rents and tie-ing up the limited number of ethernet cables. If you are not familiar with wireless, I suggest having it set up on your computer before you go to Bonaire to ensure that it works ok. PCMCIA cards can be purchased on ebay or most office supply stores.

How about the recent higher speed connections talked about here for residences?? As I remember there are at least a couple of options, if short term installation id possible. A keyword search should find the threads about it. Chat N' Browse is a nice place but not for 5-6 hours a day for three weeks. Michael Gaynor (Chat N' Browse owner) is a good sort and I suspect would give you advice for your situation if you email him off BT. Keyword search his name as author or send to Chat N' Browse.

Of course, others on Bonaire have WiFi connections so perhaps you can find a few 'hot spots' and just connect in! Or set it up in your house so you are not wired in.

Thanks peeps. I've already had email contact with Michael from the Chat 'n Browse.

So far looks like it'll gonna have to be dial-up unless I'm going to camp out at Michaels place for 3 weeks. As nice as the chat 'n browse probably is.. not my idea of an ideal vacation.

If you hear unhuman screams of a creature in total agony on the island... that'll be me. Waiting for the next page to load :-)

Oh, I'll be fine. I'll spare up some non-urgent work and drop in the chat'n browse once a day to take care of it and do all the urgent work from the dia-up.

I'll post my experiences here when I get back as a reference for future nutcases going to Bonaire.

Now off to the bank I am. Gotta pay the planetickets today or I'm not going anywhere!
