Anyone know what happen to SkyFun Bonaire? I was keen on skydiving in Bonaire, when I found a link to their website through Google. Was their existence a victim of the economic downturn in Bonaire?

With that, is there much interest in skydiving in Bonaire?

Jeff,

There's not been any skidiving here on Bonaire since I moved here 4 years ago. Maybe Michael Gaynor knows more. Michael?

Jeff...

I don't know of any skydiving since 1993, except for peligans.

You ask if there is much interest :) Have you ever noticed how many thorny trees, plants and cactus that Bonaire has growing on it's surface? With the 10-15 mph winds and the thorns, I couldn't for the life of me imagine anyone wanting to skydive, let alone doing it on purpose.

Maybe they are referring to the ParaSailing that was on Bonaire about 8-10 years ago.

We still have parasailing on Bonaire. As for skydiving, I do remember our good friend George Desalvo of Bonaire reporter had a few April Fool articles re sky diving/or some such related sport. We even had one travel editor publish it in her book complete with phone number and address (number was non working) I guess some folks are easier to fool than others. Pa Bien George, got em again.

Hmm...skydiving a hoax in Bonaire?! Ah well. Perhaps it's not a good idea because of all the scuba diving. I guess no one would want to go up to 10000 ft after going underwater to 100 ft. Gotta allow that no-fly time!

There is a skydive operation in Aruba that does tandem jumps but their website is also discountinued.

Perhaps in addition to a Japanese restaurant, I'll start a skydiving operation! I think there'd be a market for that, as well as the spectacular views from atop.

Jeff :)

Some hoax replete with an .nl/ URL. Perhaps George will comment.

And then there is the ban on flying near the island to protect the flamingos. Would that include skydivers???

Fortunately the prevailing wind blows across the island so an errant skydiver is more likely to land in the ocean than in a salt pan!

And how would the donkeys and goats handle them?? Or vice versa--some of those billys are huge, quick and agile.

Not wanting to discourage, Jeff, just thinking of the local conditions.

I was also wondering about if there was some sort of difficulty with having an operation, which involved flying around the island. I have read that the Netherlands Antilles government will not grant business permits to businesses, which it feels are "inappropriate".

As for prevailing winds, they could jump out of the plane above the water and then fly in over land. :)

Anyway, this was just all a thought. I'm an avid scuba diver plus skydiving freak.

Tongue in cheek, Jeff, though the flying rules protecting the flamingoes are true. Donkeys, goats and cactus fences are real, also. Come down and try it all.

Please, forget the sky diivng. I can lump it in with the guy who wanted to do camal tours to Washington Park. I assure you, the government would be happy to take your money for permit applications, etc. and just as happy to say "sorry". A Japanese restaurant (sushi) would be much more acceptable. Also diver debbi is abslolutely correct about the cactus. Glen, the url would not open for me...try this one www.bonairehoaxes.com

Michael,

No joy there either.

This guy was hanging around town quite awhile a few years ago--talking up a storm about how he was going to make a lot of money with the sky-diving scheme. I forget his name, but believed he really was thinking about it (as much as anyone who dreams of leaving the rest behind & living in paradise...)...he said he would tandem jump with the client from out over the water (in the final approach corridor of the airport, beyond 'windsock') and land on the airport runway. Who knows, maybe he is still waiting for his permits? Someone might as well land at the airport!

Ruth...I know you have been trying to leave for a few days now. Keep the faith. The Eagle landed last night and will again tonight. AJ was here today and some flights got off to Curacao (on to where is anyone's guess)

The ALM flights to Curacao, at least in some cases, connected to American flights from Curacao to Miami. I understand that at least as far as Saturday went, ALM was had not yet qualifed for the new U.S. security procedures and therefore was unable to fly into any U.S. airport. Not a big surprise, mind you...

Ruth:

Was the guy's name Hubert Jacobus? I received an e-mail from him. He moved his operation from Bonaire to Aruba. But his operation in Aruba ceased as well due (taxes).

Jeffrey, I really don't remember his name, only what I thought of him and his idea...-sorry!

And Michael, you're right--but I was to travel to NJ (Newark on AJ)--where I grew up, and where the WTC was a part of every (clear) day's skyline. Since mine was only a 'pleasure' trip, I postponed it indefinitely--even if the flights leave here (& Montego Bay), I'd still be behind 5+ days of delayed travelers, and probably many people more in need of a seat. So I remain in my adopted homeland for now (with a broken heart, but not a broken spirit!).
