Anybody have suggestions for renting a vehicle for 5 weeks? Normally when I come to boniare for ten days, I rent from ABCarrental. Jake/Michael are you aware of any business on the island that will rent/lease for this term? I searched the archives but did not seem to find the answer to this question.

Work a deal with Josie - she was talking about buying one for her 5-6 weeks, which end right before yours. Pool your resources, and she gets the car first, and then you get it :-)

Other than that, no I'm not aware of any other way to do long term rentals... Sorry.

Jake

My son will be on the island for about 5 weeks (most of June) so I will go in on this too. Johan (a DI at WannaDive) wants to sell his junker van first of March when he goes home.

Decided to go with a car rental, and am booked with Everts and satisfied with the rate. Possibly a purchase could have been cheaper, but got so I just didn't want to deal with something that might have become complicated. However, Kate, if you're going again next year, and I am, we should talk sooner and see if we can work something.

Still in Greg?
I will Johan and see what he wants for his banger.
If it's cheap enough it would still be cheaper then renting....we could always abandon the hulk in Jake's yard.

Wally,

you have my attention...since I am from WVa, we are used to driving klunkers and parking them on blocks in the yard (in front of the trailor) :-). I arrive Mar 28 to May 5

Hello Greg,
Try Highway Transport Suzuki web site at http://www.highwayrentals.an . We rented their older Suzuki STD trans with no Air two times. Not the best looking mini van and a bit old with some rust but they ran good and never gave us any problems. The mini's also do well on unpaved roads and on the beaches. Highway Transport will also pick you up and drop you off at the airport. We declined all of the extra insurance since the mini's are considered a car and covered by my AE credit card. But check you card issurer first, not all cover outside of the US. My American Express credit card does and it saves me a bundle. Also be carefull if you decline the insurance. Many of the credit card insurance policies limit you to four weeks or less. Get a copy of their coverage and restriction, read it and carry with with you.
Lance

I emailed Bob at WannaDive to check on Johan's Suzuki van. Johan paid $1200 for it, and I knew it needs a front spindle...so he has to fix that for us. Hope to hear back this weekend. Johan has used the van for about 6 months so I'm thinking he fixes the spindle and we give him $800. $400 each for a months use each isn't to bad. When my son leaves, we sell it and split the receipt after each others repairs. It is a true clunker, you can see the curb on the passenger side through the rust hole in the floor. I think it is a perfect island car.

We am? Yeah, I'm operating at 100%.
If you are there longer than four weeks you can just switch to another credit card instead of switching companies. We did with Netty.

we will be going this summer for seven weeks. just found out that our mastercard will only cover rentals for fifteen days. our visa will cover out of country rentals for 30 days. looks like we will go with the visa first then switch to mc then back to visa again. also keep in mind that no credit card will cover insurance on a pickup truck.

I got a good rate for six weeks at Everts. Great people to deal with (Ilka is the owner and is extremely pleasant). I switched credit cards after 30 days.

Rented a Suzuki Carry Van, and really enjoyed it. Plenty of room for four, they can put racks in the back to hold tanks, and the back opens UP, which can provide shade when suiting up if you position the car well. Definitely easier than a pickup.
