OK, American Express covers your CDW if you are enrolled in their plan and of course have their c card. BUt, what about liability on other car?
I can't seem to get a staight answer. Most of our US auto coverage companies want off the hook outside continental US. When renting the truck who supplies the liability? If you waive the CDW are you waiving liability also?

Reid..the liability coverage afforded by the umbrella is world wide in scope. A VERY good endorsement to have!

David, we have had the Amex coverage, but it DOES NOT cover rental in Bonaire! We found that out last year...We just go for the full coverage when we rent now. Better to be safe than sorry.

The card must be an AMEX branded card, not for instance a Delta Skymiles card by AMEX.
An example of a suitable card is the Costco AMEX card, or any credit card issued directly by AMEX.
You must also have signed up for the Premium rental protection.

Assuming your referring to AMEX Truck Coverage program, my understanding is that that coverage is liablilty for your vehicle only. I've used it 3 times over the years and it worked well for fender benders not involving another vehicle (don't ask); I didn't realize at the time that it didn't cover the other vehicle/guy so now I'm rethinking its use.... One suggestion I read on the board was to use the AMEX card for your coverage then buy the coverage for the other guy from the rental agency... haven't tried that yet.

For some reason https:// appears twice, just delete the first one, and it works.

We have Amex issued card. We were told that the coverage we bought for renting a vehicle was not good on Bonaire. I'll have to check with Ken for more specifics, or get him to come over here to give further details...

Amex offers a specail Plan for $19.95 per truck rental. Premium rental protection plan has to be put on your account by a agent, and when you pay for the rental with Amex card you are covered. It doesn't cover the other guy, but it covers your truck and up to $2500 in personal property that you might loose during the escapade. It is not an automatic thing! You have to ask for The Premium rental protection plan when you speak to the agent. If they don't know what you are talking about GET ANOTHER AGENT!!!

We have the Amex Premium Car Rental Protection plan that kicks in at $19.95 per rental (they also have a $24.95 product with higher limits). It is primary coverage and good for up to 42 consecutive days. (We also have an Umbrella policy.) Another consideration is that their basic free (and by the way, secondary) coverage will not cover pick-up trucks, whereas the Premium Plan paid coverage does. Anyway, according to the Amex plan policy terms and conditions, there is no exclusion for Bonaire car/truck rentals.
The following is from the plan coverage details...
"Coverage is worldwide except for vehicles rented in Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, and New Zealand."

Not to get too far off subject, but our Amex Premium coverage actually is an automatic thing. I enrolled in the plan on the Amex website and it automatically is charged each time we rent a car using any of our Amex issued cards. We don't have to arrange it with an agent each time.

That is correct. We enrolled in this plan for $19.95 several years ago. Not it's automatic each time we rent using our AMEX card, but you must enroll the first time.

Marcus, I am not in the insurance business and by no means am I an expert on this subject, but I don't think there is a liability waiver or liability insurance product available from car rental agencies. You can imagine the risk they would be assuming to insure you for damages caused to another person's property or worse yet, the person. That is not to say that they don't cover themselves for liability. I'm sure they do. But the rental contract puts you on the line. The options are CDW, a collision waiver and LDW, a loss waiver (as in car stolen). I don't think they offer further coverages. To my knowledge the only way to protect yourself for liability is by purchasing a personal Umbrella policy here at home, as others have mentioned before. These policies provide excess coverages to enhance your homeowners and auto policies, are worldwide in scope, and aren't really that costly when you consider the consequences of not having this coverage. Could "save the farm".
Wow, I have been way too chatty today. Time to lurk again.

Thanks Connie.
I have an Umbrella Policy on my home insurance.
I have the AMEX Premium that is applied automatically every time I rent any vehicle.
I've checked and pickup rentals are covered in Bonaire
I always use AMEX and decline the insurance touted by the rental agency.
I have heard that "one" rental agency is adding $25 on to the rental charge if you use AMEX and decline their insurance.
Anyone know if this is true?

One additional caveat about Amex Premium Coverage: it only kicks in for rentals from a business whose primary business is car rentals; in other words, if you get a rental as part of a package from a resort like Buddy Dive who has their own trucks, the Amex Premium Coverage is NOT applicable.
