I know many of you out there must have dive computers, but we don't. I was in a conversation with a new friend that uses one and he is suprised we don't own one since he belives having one makes it so easy to figure about bottom times and intervals between dives and such and said that since we do so many dives in 3 wks. we would benifit by getting one. We figure the tables ourselves the "old fashion way" and never "push the envelope" Can I rent one in Bonaire? Appreciate any feedback/comments sug. on dive computers Masha Danki!

Yes, you can rent dive computers here. I did a quick check around the web sites and the rate seems to be $10-11 per day. The trick with dive computers is that both dive buddies have to have one. You are not suppose to use the other person's computer even is you float above them the whole dive. And if you have the same dive buddy most of the time like my husband, it is handy if you have similiar brands that use the same table mechanics. With different brands, you may notice one computer is more strict than the other. Or it could be your dive buddy is just hanging out at the bottom more :-)

The only problem we have is that we relie on them so much that if the battery fails, you have to break out the tables and do some figuring you haven't done in years.

Even if you have a computer, it is recommended that you still use tables as well. The PADI wheel is a great back-up, as it allows for multi-level diving and is really a lot of fun to use. As Linda mentioned, each diver should have his own computer. Play it safe...

Dive a few dives with a computer and you will never want to dive without one!

Make sure you can read the information on their screen! Some of the newer ones are so packed full of information, the numbers are tiny. I also like to have the information I need - depth, time, time to decom - all on one screen. I hate the ones that change from one screen to another - when I look at it, I want the information right in my face! A way of quickly checking assent rate is also important.
My main computer is more conservative than my husband's one but I also might be down deeper or stay u/w longer; for me it is an extra safety aspect. And I tend to not push the numbers anyway.
Rodale's magazine did check into some of the computers - maybe that might be a place to start.
