We have been to Bonaire several times. We still can't come up with a good way to store the keys while we dive. You have to leave your windows open. The remote door opener has to be kept from the water. On the rental cars we have had, we can't take the key off.

Put them in one of your BC pockets and take them with you. Don't try to lock your truck and hide them somewhere. There could be someone watching.

I wear a small waterproof box on a lanyard around my neck. It contains my driver's license and $20 or some guilders. I snap the keys to the lanyard. Never had a problem except the salt water will rust the key chain. We ALWAYS go to the local bike shop(de Freewheiler) and get a copy of our rental truck key-for about $8 its the best insurance around.

The cheap truck I rent comes with a very plain key, so no electronics involved. I have a very small screw type carabiner that I use to attach the key to my BC. This has worked 100% so far. As an alternate my wife will attach the key to her swim suit strap with the same rig which is then under her wetsuit, 100% with that too. If you have a waterproof container that will fit in a swimsuit pocket it can then go under your wetsuit. It may make an unsightly lump, but darn hard to lose.

Get your car back three days later with stinky fingers... that does not seem to be a good plan.

Take them with you, which leads to one of the problems unique to Bonaire, rusted ignition key cylinders.

I hid mine in the gas fill door. But you can also buy a waterproof cell phone pouch at any marine supply store and put it in there with your money/credit cards/driver's license etc. I did this as well and it kept everything perfectly dry while diving.

We use one of those cylindrical shaped waterproof containers that you can buy at most local dive shops. The keys fit right in there along with credit card and some cash. Everything stays dry.

The container is on a lanyard and, while slightly bulky, tucks nicely into your wetsuit.

we do what most of the people have already stated...put them in a waterproof box attached to my bc. the box isn't as watertight as it used to be so i make sure to dry them off before starting the truck.

eric, the gas fill door isn't a good idea. thieves have been known to open the doors so they can siphon the gas.

Washing the keys off with fresh water is what we do to keep the ignition from rusting out. Waterproof container they go in, but yup, sometimes it isn't always waterproof.

I take a carabineer with a key ring attached. Remove truck key and room key from the tags they come with and put the keys on the split ring attached to the carabineer. Use your silicone lube (the stuff you use for "O" rings) on the keys a couple times during the week to protect the keys.

Clip the carabineer to your BC.

At the end of the week, put the original tags back on the keys.

That diaper pin is also handy for pinning some extra o-rings in your BC....

here's a thought, inside your dive boot, no need to waterproof them.

are you kidding ? my feet are the first things to get wet inside my dive booties !!!...just put inside your wetsuit..there is alittle pocket or pin it and then alittle fresh water rinse after the dive..we've been doing that for years..NEVER leave it inside the gas cap or under the tire.."they " are always watching from afar where you stash things and know you will be in the water for at least an hour..sad but true that people have to take advantage of situation...so leave nothing onshore..have great dives!

We lost our keys in the water one night. We had them attached to one of the pull apart keychains, which works fine at home in fresh water. But after 12 days in salt water, it failed. So watch out for that.
