We have rented a dive truck for the week while we are in Bonaire. I have heard while you are at the divesite, you should leave nothing in the car and your windows down. Does this include flip flops, clothes, sunglasses? So you should just bring only what you will wear in the water? Then have to go back home before you go to lunch ect to get shoes, clothes?

Thanks!

lindsey, that's pretty good advice. we've been going to bonaire since 1995 and have yet to have anything taken from our truck but it doesn't hurt to be safe. i take cheap flipflops, a ratty tee shirt, and old sunglasses. mary does the same thing...we just don't leave anything that we'd miss if it disappeared. she does leave her glasses in the truck but has spare glasses at our house. bonaire isn't that big of a place that it's too inconvenient to go back for lunch.

if you are staying north of town do a morning dive or two north. then drive south, stopping at your room for clothes or lunch. after lunch do some dives south. it's not as bad as it sounds.

Lindsey - like Pat I have never had anything stolen from a vehicle but I follow the rule of leaving windows down (keeps it "cool" as well); leave nothing you can't lose; open the glove box to show nothing is in there, etc. I use a dry box to take license, keys, etc. with me on the dive.

Pat also makes a good suggestion on organizing dive sites around returns to your room to re-stock, eat, etc. Really easy to do on Bonaire. You will drive less on Bonaire (maybe in a week even) than you do in a typical day of running errands around home.

Great. So I guess if you leave anything in the car, make sure its something that you won't mind if it goes missing. Thanks for the advice, hope I have as much luck as you guys with holding on to my stuff!

Lindsay, ten trips, nothing ever taken. Stuff the flip flops, shorts, t, hat, under the seat, leave the windows down. We freeze water bottles to have nice cold water after the dive. Then reuse them as water bottles or fill them with water to rinse off after a dive. Bonaire has no recycling, so we try to use the bottles until they are pretty much toast...

another thing we were told....don't put all your stuff (shirts, flip flops, etc) in a bag. if someone is goint to grab it, don't make it easy by allowing them to grab one bag. we always leave the doors unlocked and the windows down except that we put the windward window up enough to block the wind.

we leave 2 liter bottles of water on the dash to warm up and use for rinse water after our dive. the end result ranges from slightly warm to the hottest water we've ever had on bonaire.

Thank you all for such great advice. I'll be sure to reuse my water bottles-I'm big on recycling.

At the diveshop where I work we have a 'guard dog' that loves diving. I regularly take him with me and he is very good at keeping unwanted strangers away from the car.
