We call those things chicklettes LOL! They are quite top heavy and I haven't seen them in the rental pools for a while. I read your other thread but have to LOL at what you called it

Kobi, agree about the easy of the truck, but both less gas used on the van/toaster/chicklette/ and no need for CDW, as insurance from the USA covers it.

lydia, i'd recommend checking with your insurance company in the states. ours didn't cover rentals out of the country except canada. we were covered since we used our visa card. but visa and mastercard don't cover truck rentals. american express used to cover trucks but i've heard they've changed some of their policies so it's best to check with them before you go.

American Express has a feature that does cover trucks out of the country. You need to sign up for it in advance. Then whenever you rent a truck using your AMEX you can decline the CDW and you are charged $19.95 from AMEX for the length of the rental.

OK, there seems to be 2 postings going for the same subject. First off,. I do not know of an auto insurance company in the states that will cover the collision, liabilty etc in a foreign country. If there is one, maybe we should all switch. Second, Before we went with the xtra rental insurance with AMEX, our Mastercard did cover us in a SUV. We were told as long as nothing happened off road we were ok. I explained that alot of the roads on the island are gravel. They said that was ok, but nothing like going 4 wheeling. When we started using AMEX, they said a pickup truck would be covered, again as long as we weren't out 4 wheeling. I would check with your CC, and tell them that the majority of the car rentals on island happen to be pickups. If not switch to AMEX and get the extra insurance.

There is no U.S. auto company that will insured your Prop. damage or Bodily injury (PD or BI)liability exposure on Bonaire. The scope of the policies do not include Bonaire. However an umbrella policy added onto your homeowner policy will cover the liability exposure since the scope is worldwide (not so with the auto policies).

our rentals had been, sedan, jeep, toaster, toaster, then pickup, pickup, etc. till we bought our own. it was the first trip renting the pickup when i happened to read an article (three days before the trip) that mentioned that neither mastercard nor visa would cover the insurance on a truck. i called both companies who confirmed that. i tried to switch back to a jeep but none was available so we stuck with the truck. at that time, the cost of a jeep without the CDW was equal to the cost of a pickup with CDW so it evened out. i'm not sure what the costs are today....that was maybe in 2001 or so.

Pat, It has been some time since I researched the insurance issue but, as I recall, Jeeps and other 4 wheel vehicles are also not covered by most credit cards. Switching to a jeep might not be helpful.

Correction: Prior message should read "4 wheel drive", not 4 wheel
