Does anyone have experience bringing their gear bags with them to dive sites? I am asking because I know you are not supposed to leave anything in your vehicles and to leave them unlocked, so I was curious as to how everyone transports their gear. Thanks for the info.

Catherine, We put our dive gear in the back of our truck. When we get to the site we gear up and everything is on our person and go dive. Nothing left in the truck. Gear bags are not a necessity... Ron

Catherine, welcome to Bonaire Talk. The usual routine is you just load everything in the back of the truck. BCD, reg, wetsuit, weights, mask, fins, water bottles, etc. If I have time, I set my gear up and then just lay it in the tank rack. Wear a crummy pair of shorts and flip flops. You get to the dive site, suit up and get in the water. You really don't need to carry all the extra stuff you have in your gear bag from site to site. I do have a little mesh bag that I put extra o-rings, swimmer's ear, and mask defog in, and I stuff that under the seat. You aren't that far away from your hotel so if you forget something (which has happened to most of us) you can just drive back and get it.

In fact, we leave our gear bags at home. Traveling with them is like a red flag to the baggage thieves!

We do bring our gear bags and have never had a problem but have thought that we never really don't need them - but that's OK.

Don't take a chance with any gear bag that's worth any significant amount of moolah. I have a pretty cheap mesh gear bag that I leave in my truck when shore diving -- if it were to be stolen, it would not be a very big deal. For me, that's the game plan: don't leave anything that would leave you upset if it were taken. That said, I've done probably 100 or 150 shore dives on Bonaire and have never had ANYTHING taken. I also always found amusing the story of someone who likes to take chocolate flavored laxatives, put them in candy bar wrappers, leave them on the seat of the truck and just HOPE that someone steals them and eats them!

We purchase mesh laundry bags from Target just for the purpose you've described above. We throw our BC's in the truck and put our misc. dive gear in our mesh bag. This allows us to keep track of our stuff since we dive with more than two people in our group. Again, if stolen, no worries!!!
