Sorry for another insurance question, but this is a little different from the others I have seen on this web site.

I am considering a car rental with Budget. Budget's web site includes no information on the liability insurance that is included with the car. I called the toll free number for Budget in the United States and they did not know what level of liability insurance the Bonaire Budget offers.

Avis' web site states "Rental rates include automobile liability insurance in accordance with applicable laws and terms of the rental agreement." http://www.avisbonaire.com/TermsConditions.htm (Note that liability insurance is different from the LDW that some rental car companies offer for an extra charge, which has been discussed at length on the web site. Liability insurance covers injuries to others and their property as opposed to damage to the rental car.) The Avis statement is pretty vague. I am trying to figure out what the "applicable laws" are in Bonaire. Can anyone shed light on this? Thanks!

Don't know what the minimum required amount of liabity coverage is on Bonaire (if any)..I suspect it's in the area of 10-15k. At any rate if you have an umbrella policy endorsed onto your homeowners policy that should cover you up to about 1 mil. The coverage under the umbrella should be worldwide (check your policy for aggregate limits & scope of coverage)and provides excess coverage over any primary policies. So if you have an umbrella policy personally I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi
I have, for years pondered the problem of liability insurance when renting overseas. Last oct. when we were there I was talking to one of the dive staff at Divi and he assured me that all rental cars have liability insurance because you cannot register a car Bonaire without it. How much is another question. In the car I found a paper indicating a premium paid of about $350 dollars. What that tells us is any ones guess. While we have an umbrella policy I'm not too sure of its coverage overseas. I would welcome comment by anybody sure of the facts.
Mickey

Mickey.. Read the section of your Umbrella policy titled "policy period & territory" & it should indicate coverage is WORLDWIDE. Any questions, I suggest you read your policy & ask your broker or agent if still confused. It pays to have an umbrella policy, the coverage is as broad as it gets in the insurance industry.
