Does anyone know if I can rent a standard road bike (drop handle bars, thin tires, and clipless pedals) on the island? I'll try out some off road trips but I'm a road biker at heart.

More than a month and it looks as if you didn't get any response to your roadbike question. I'd assume that is pretty much a negative wouldn't you? My husband & I are also road bikers. I can't seem to get into the fat tire thing at home but I believe they make a whole lot more sense on Bonaire. As I recall, their roads wouldn't be to kind on those skinny tires or the behind. Thanks for asking the question though, now we know.

Must have missed the original post (or secretly hoped someone would have an answer in the affirmative :-) ).

Fat tire bikes, mountain and "Schwinn-style" (as I think of them - Dutch road bikes with fat tires instead of thin tired touring bikes), are the norm on Bonaire.

Drop a note to info@DiscoverBonaire.com and see if perhaps they have some road/touring bikes for rent (it's certainly possible).

There are paved roads surrounding the island, so terrain and road conditions aren't as much of an issue as you indicated, although spiny plants might be... especially when said spines are on the road after having fallen of said plants.

I thought that there were some bike clubs with races
on the island? Isn't there bike shop that has a few
road racers that could spare a bike?

BTW are you using Axis 200 camera's on the web
