We're heading back to paradise next month, I was just wondering if anyone can give us a current report on the condition of the shortcut back from Karpata. I'm referring to the dirt road less than a mile or so after you make the right hand turn at Karpata; the one that's marked with the rock with the bicycle on it that has a pretty serious uphill section. I know that when it's in "good" condition that it's pretty rutted but passable in a small truck, but that when it's "bad" it's pretty unpassable. If anyone's got an update it would be appreciated.

Scott,

I drove it in my car about three weeks ago and had no problems. We are in Bonaire about every other month and have never seen the road so bad that I could not drive it in a truck.

Debbie,
I have two great children that run our businesses.
I have been telling them for five years that I am retired and they are starting to believe me. They now ask when I will be in town verses when I will be gone. We plan to make it to Bonaire 10 times next year if the economy holds up for us.

We still get PBD like everyone. It just comes on faster. After being home for a week it feels like 5 or 6 months.

Debbie - my eyes are now green. I bet we could hide in the luggage on one of the trips - what do you think?

Micael, You certainly have a good deal going on there! Great children too. :-) Wow! 10x a year! I can only dream of going that much for the next 6 years or so, when we retire too!

Mara, my eyes are turning green as I type! I say we go for it, I would even pay the extra weight charge for luggage for us!

I'm with you on that Debbie. Michael - when is the next trip that we have to be ready for?

Mara,

Leaving in two weeks for a short stay.

I do tend to push the limits on luggage weight and type of things in my luggage but something breathing might cause more than normal security problems.
Anyway I am going through San Juan this trip and would hate to see you stranded there because American Eagle could not figure out how to balance the weight in the plane and decide to leave the luggage in storage for some unspecified future flight.

Not that American Eagle would ever do something like that.(more than once a day)

You may find you have less luggage after it goes through San Juan.

Debbie,

We will be back the last week of November and first week of December. I need to dive to work off the excess turkey I will eat during Thanksgiving. Maybe we will see you.

Will be at home in February waiting for a new grandchild scheduled for Valentines day. We plan to be on the Island March 6 to 21. Eventually our schedules will cross. Just reread your email. I am on the Island the first week on November and leaving November 7 to go to DEMA show.

Scott,

We just got back from a week in Bonaire and used the shortcut twice with 5 people, 5 sets of gear and 10 tanks in a small Hillux. No problems. Obviously a litle bumpy but no large craters.

Have a good trip.

Jeff

Thanks, Michael and Jeff, for the updates. Sounds like we'll be using that road in a couple of weeks. And, Jeff, "a little bumpy" is certainly an understatement from my experience -- tanks flying all over the bed of the truck is what I've usually experienced! And thanks to everyone else for the usual entertaining BT sidebars!

Scott - if you use a weight belt drape it over the tanks - it helps a little. Otherwise try to put gear bags or whatever near the tanks so that they don't go crazy.

Last week we ran into some lost older folks trying to go the wrong way down the one way beach road. They didn't have a map and were trying to find a way back to the cruise ship so we offered to let them follow us. We took the shortcut not knowing a thing about it -and with them following - they must of thought we were nuts! The condition was fair and both cars were full of people that were laughing pretty hard.

We have seen many cars and trucks going the wrong way on the Karpata one way road. It happens all the time and the police don't enforce the one-way law... Ron
