I had read here in a thread below about the Amex car rental insurance program and decided to join before I went to Curaçao. While I was there the people I went with convinced me to wind up the windows and lock the truck. I had always left them open in Bonaire but I was told it was different on Curaçao. Well, after 4 days someone broke a window on our truck and stole a cooler with sandwiches in it(there was nothing really of value in the truck besides camera batteries) When we left Curaçao, Budget charged me $88 for the window. When I got home I informed Amex and they returned the money on my card within the week. I think I will continue to use AMEX considering it would have not been covered with Budget's CDW because of the deductible. I wasn't sure if anyone was able to say they had gotten a claim back from Amex yet, so I thought I'd post this about a happy customer.

Remember everyone that this is NOT the regular AMEX coverage but the special extra insurance. Please see the post below:

AS an FYI, I have no car insurance ( no car) and rented a car recently using the regular included AMEX insurance. On returning the car they charged me with a star on the windshield. When the rental company sent me a bill I contacted AMEX, and they took care of everything in a few days.

Seb -

Which star did you have on your windshield? They can be quite messy to clean off, hence the charge. ;-)

Seriously though, that is good to hear the regular included insurance still works....

Ok..I will ask....what the heck IS a star on the window that would cause you to get a charge?? I have never heard that expression before.

Probably got a rock hit. Some of those Bonaire stones could have real star power!!

As Jim says, it is a little chip out or star in the windshield as a result of a flying rock.

I also had the benefit of Amex supplemental coverage when someone added a dent to the myriad scrapes and dents on the truck that I rented from Avis. I faxed a copy of the rental agreement with the $100 add-on for the dent, as well as the diagram showing the purported new dent and received quick and courteous service in submitting the claim. They even held up payment to Avis until they submitted the required information. All in all, couldn't be happier with the coverage and claims handling. And, try find first-dollar coverage from among the island vendors.

Its good to know AMEX makes good on their claims. I have addl rental insurance via my MC by Citibank, yet when I had a small claim ($376)from a trip to vegas it took 6 mos to pay and dozens of phone calls, complaints, and a bunch of documents. It was a huge pain!!!

New Yorkers take note: Amex Premium Car Rental Protection is not available to us:

"Please be aware that New York residents are not eligible to enroll at this time" from

Too bad, I thought I discovered a way to avoid AB's $140 or so per week insurance charge.

Car rentals: Is it cheaper and more certain to book from the U.S. before leaving for Bonaire? If not, who is best renter for off-and-on need? Trucks are mentioned, but, I've never driven one. Is there a best choice car for a single female? I'll be in Bon for about 4 weeks and am reluctant to pay for that long a rental, unless I'll need it. Town is within walking distance and so are the snorkel sites. Do the out-of-town snorkel sites need a car to get there? Trips and excursions will (I think) provide transportation. Any help and detailed advise will be gratefully received! Also, any comments or advice about assured airport transportation after 9 P M and before 7 A M.

Ruth, you will have no problems getting a taxi at the airport or ask you accommodation provider. I am not a driver of big vehicles but have no problems on Bonaire, the traffic is very steady. Out of town snorkel sites do need a car but there are plenty of people who do excursions who will pick you up. There is also the Woodwind and the water taxi. If you are coming for a month you can easily find rental places when you get here.

Ruth, book in the US before you go so you are assured to have a vehicle. Go to www.infobonaire.com and check out the car rental agencies. I've rented from Budget, AB, and Netty's in the past, and found Netty's to be the cheapest, and she's a doll to boot. You can rent a car, so you don't have to drive a truck. You will need a vehicle to go to the snorkel sites North and South. Maybe rent a vehcile for a few days to do island touring and then snorkel where you are the rest of the time. Darlene can help you more with the not having a car thing, as she doesn't rent a car when on island:-)

I've also had GREAT experiences with Everts Car Rental. Ilka is a local lady and is easy and accommodating to work with. I rent a small van from her and enjoy it a lot. I've also had a small car (before I was a diver and found the van worked better) and when I wanted to visit the park, just switched it for a truck with better clearance. Everts' rates are great and their service matches it.

Thanks Josie, I forgot about Everts. I tried to rent with them last time but they didn't have any trucks available when I was there....thus, my suggestion of reserving before you get to the island if you can, more options:-)

Thanks Josie, that was my reminder to reserve for March with Everts. I agree with your praise. A warm greeting by Ilka, good service, and a reliable car await us every year.
