Can one safely bicycle on the roads around the island? Security for parked bikes? Distances? Safe from traffic? We are staying at the Sorobon Beach Resort. thanks.

Yes bicycling is safe on Bonaire, all you have to do is (1) rent a bicycle (2) use proper clothing (3)Bring one or two bottles of water (4) use sunblock "always"(5) check a road map (6)Keep your eyes on the road. -remember that sorobon is far from downtown by bicycle (Depends your training). You will find a lot of Burros "Donkeys" and goats on the road. Have a good time !

J.J.
One thing you should mention. NEVER run over cactus!
Sorobon is usually upwind from everywhere on the island.
Mickey

When the weather cooperates I cycle from Kralendijk to Sorobon almost every weekend. takes me from 20 to 30 minutes, depends on the (wind)direction. Frankly I do almost all my travelling on bycicle. No problemo. Take a repairkit with you and lights!

I agree with the above - Bonaire by bike is the best way to really take in the island. It used to take me about 45 mins from the marina to Sorobon.....and you ride into the wind no matter what direction you are headed :-)

A word of advice - lock your bike in a heavily trafficed area (in front of Karel's Beach Bar, on the corner in front of Bonaire Travel in town). Remove anything not welded to the frame or it will disappear (tire pump, under seat repair kit, lights, etc.) If the front tire is removable, make sure it is secured with a coil/lock through the frame.....

Make sure to ride up the seaside from town to Karpata, turn right and ride a little way until you come to the bike marker (red stone with cyclist) and take that road back south towards town - you will have an outstanding view from the crest of the hill. Worth every drop of sweat! It would be about 90 minutes round trip at a moderate pace from the marina and back.

I'm not sure when you are going to be on BON, but late May/June is the windiest time of year.

Enjoy!

I was driving around that area and got out to take a pic of great piece of dead wood. Got a pain in my foot...looked down....had the biggest dang thorn in my foot I have ever seen. It went through my super thick dive boot like it was butter and ended up a good inch and a half in my foot. Be careful out there !!!

where can I rent or buy a bike? I'm thinking I might buy a cheap used one, use it for the two weeks we'll be there then give it to a Bonairean friend of ours.
