I have found that many visitors who use credit cards here have not notified their banks that there will be some unusal destinations showing up when we try to get approvals. It is a good idea if you make a call to your card providers before you leave so you can avoid problelms once you arrrive. Also, some busineeses levy a service charge of %5 if you use your card. Ask before they run the slip and many times they will waive it. (I believe it is a cost of doing businees and should not be levied)

I notified VISA and my bank in advance 'cos I was planning on using CC and debit cards there. Both told me it was a very good thing to have done, as my accounts might have been locked otherwise. Getting cash from the ATMs was cheaper with the debit, or I'd have left it at home.

Doing that, I had no problems at all. Well, at least with the PLASTIC part of the trip....

Two years ago our Visa card was blocked and it was a real hassle to get it reopened from Bonaire. You must call in advance. Also, we found that using the ATM at the airport with a debit card is the best way to get cash. The rate is better than a bank and no service charge like Traveler's Checks.

Gregg..I sent you a reply....I will resend it...No one here charges a service charfe for travellers checks. The bank even gives you 1.78 instead of 1.777

George, I only ever got service charged by MY bank, never by Maduro, for withdrawing dollars or guilders. My new bank, Commerce, charges nothing.

I have been charged a fee on Traveler Checks in Mexico and French Polynesia, therefore, I do not use them anymore. I am glad to hear Bonaire has not yet begun this service charge practice. I use credit cards where I can and guilders on occasion. My best ATM rate last year was a debit card at the airport and my bank did not assess a fee, perhaps an oversight.
