We are travelling from England to Bonaire en route to Ecuador on 23 November and stopping over for 3 days. We would like to spend 1 or 2 days snorkelling. With time against us, should we snorkel independently or with a group. Any suggestions please.
The 2 of us plan to hire a scooter for a day. Ant suggestions for the best route please.
Finally we are keen walkers and hope to walk for a few hours in the National Park. Is this the best use of our time.
Finally, does anyone know the weather forecast for this period please.
I have very much enjoyed reading the helpful comments on this gem of a website. Thank you very much.

Depends on how experienced you are with snorkeling. You can jump anywhere in the water and snorkel. Some nice books have been advised on this site on where to dive and snorkel. National Park is very good for snorkeling too. I would do the park with a car. To big to walk.
When you hire a scooter, you'll probably get a map free of charge. You cant get lost if you make a tour around the island

Hi Malcom.

Absolutely try Sorobon !!!!!!! Excellent snorkeling and a beautiful site also plus a great ride by scooter (be sure to take the "curvy road" as opposed to the straight road out of Belnam to take advantage of the best scenic route).

End of November usually ends the rainy season. So it's a hit or miss with winds usually picking up closer to December :-)

Have fun !!!!!!!

Malcolm:

I typically dive and am very comfortable doing my own snorkel. That said, I have heard very good things about Renee and about the Woodwind (leaves from the Divi). I also think Sorobon would be nice. If you have the appropriate gear (sturdy booties to get over the coral rubble and any hiding urchins) almost all of the leeward side is open for snorkel (just look for the yellow rocks). If you lack the booties, places like Sorobon, Oil Slick (don't worry, no oil there) and some of the resort docks (check in with the dive shop first -- some charge a fee, some do not) make that not a problem (as, of course, would the Woodwind).

In terms of the park, it is better done as a day long commitment. There is much to see but it cannot be driven very quickly (and the long route is much better). Scooters are not allowed in the park and I would suggest renting a pick-up truck if you plan on that trip!

The rain season lasts from October till February. Info also at http://www.infobonaire.com/weather.html

Sometimes there is more rain in the beginning of the season and last season had more rain in January, February and even in March.

Malcolm, you must you use a jeep or truck in the Park. There are some very nice trails and the ranger will give you maps for hiking. You can combine your hiking with some good snorkeling in the park. Again the Ranger will assist. I recommend the Woodwind and/or Rene' for your other snorkeling adventures. You will not waste time driving to unknown spots. You can rely on either Dee from the Woodwind or Rene' to provide a great day in the water. A day in the park, a day with Rene' and then a day on the Woodwind will make your 3-day stay memorable and fun.

I second Annette's recommendation of Sorobon for snorkeling, and just want to add that you will walk a fair distance in knee-deep-thigh-deep water to get to the reef there. About 15-20 minutes across the shallow bay. It can be a big work-out when the wind is in your face on the way out. It is well worth it! Just want you to be prepared. Snorkeling on the leeward side of the island involves no walking at all. Hop in and look. :-)
