Just curious. I've looked around, and haven't found mention of anything over there.

I had a stunning tour of east Maui a couple of years ago, and wondered if anyone on the island ran ultralights. It's a great way to get an overview of places that are awkward to see. If you're headed to Maui, check out the gent that runs tours from the Hana Airport. It's fantastic!

Of course, they're not for squeamish tourists, as you're (literally!) hanging out at 500+ feet.

As I understand ultralights they operate in minimal wind conditions. Right at this moment Bonaire's wind at the airport is 14 mph and it is often higher: Trade winds. Might be the reason you find no ultralights advertised. Would be good!!! Closest I have seen is a parasail boat along the Kralendijk waterfront.

We had around a 10 to 15 knot wind in Maui, which made the takeoff shorter and the landing slower. It was reasonably steady, so it wasn't any trouble. Gusty winds would be *bad* on final approach, but once you're off the ground, it's all relative.

The "light sport aircraft" are another alternative, and they usually have skins so the paying customers don't feel quite so naked in the air. I used to skydive, so the open frame of an ultralight didn't bother me a bit. LSAs have bigger motors and wings, and could handle higher ground winds, probably up to 30 knots.

Come to remember, I believe there is a prohibition on aircraft and helicopters flying along the waterfront. Probably would include ultralights, etc., at least until edges pushed. Maui and Bonaire are both sea islands so what is physically possible on one should work on the other.

Not sure about the venturesomeness of some flyers here. Some have been leery of the light twins and even Otters and ATRs flying inter-island; they would find UL an adventure. Good fun, though.
