I'm a trip leader for a very active scuba club in S. Florida. I'm bringing my group of 16 to Bonaire in July, and we're doing a "drive and dive" package.
I want to prepare everyone for the high gas prices they're going to find in Bonaire. I'm going to soften the blow by pointing out the fact that the rental trucks are small and have standard transmission which means great fuel economy.
I know that gas prices may change a lot between now and July, but what are the current gas prices? I'd like to get a general idea. Thanks, Robyn

Thanks for the info Linda. Yes, it does seem like gas is a big rip-off! I hope we don't catch up to Bonaire too quickly,,,I just calculated $3.78 per gallon!

Notice I left the liter to gallon conversion to someone else. I'm still working on the coffee and didn't want to hurt myself.

Just a small example of a rip off... Here in Holland we pay approx. € 1.22 per liter. That's approx. 1.51 US$ per Liter. I'm too tired to convert that to Gallons...

If you use a credit card to pay for the gas you may be subject to an additional charge. I believe I paid an additional US$1.50 to use a credit card when I filled up at Lisa Gas.

And the crude oil that the gasoline is only part of costs the producers just less than US$3 per barrel (that is 44 US gallons or 166 liters) to deliver to the tanker where the refiners (and, therefor, us) pay US$30 or so for that same barrel. That is the real ripoff.

Keep in mind everybody, that these people on the island have to pay to refine the petro, store it, and transfer it to the station. As we all know, Bonaire is not a large island and I think in the two (seperate weeks, 1 year apart) weeks that we stayed there we filled up maybe twice a week and did A LOT of shore diving and drove to Rincon and Slahgbhaii (spelling!?) at least once a week. We also did several trips to the salt flats, slave huts, Indian inscriptions, up to Jibe City, Lac Bay, etc... Not to mention the daily (if not 2-3 times) trips into town from the Black Durgon. To me it doesn't seem like that big of an expense to incur for what you get out of the trip- you would spend just as much, if not more staying in a big city for a week or two and site seeing (seeing as how they are much more spread out)! That's just me, though!

I highly recommend putting four people to a truck, if you're a group trip, to lighten the cost per person. Pick people's groups based on thier compatibility and diving habits- it's what we do when we go!

I hear that gas in San Diego is already at $2.749 US per gallon for the "cheap" stuff. Out where I live in VA it is $1.529 and I still feel bad filling up. I was about in tears putting 61 gallons in my RV for a recent trip. :-(

We talked to a couple working on a 72' motor yacht and they had just come from Venezuela where it was .12 per liter. We spent 92 guilders on gas in the 3 weeks we were on Bonaire.
