We are going to be in Bonaire soon and some of the people in our group are vegetarians, does anyone have any suggestions on restaurants in Bonaire that serve vegetarian meals?

We have a couple of Vegans that have come to visit us on Bonaire several times. As pure vegetarians eating out can be a challenge anywhere. They are very fond of Rendez Vous restaurant. They call in advance so the chef has time to come up with something interesting. He always does.

We eaten out with them at many other places and they generally have to have something special made up. All of the restaurants have been happy to make something. Most places list a vegetarian meal but it might have cheese, eggs, or other dairy products in it. If your friends are less strict they should find eating out easy.

They did bring down a supply of vegetarian "cold cuts". If you have accommodations with a kitchen, you can usually find tofu and there is a great selection of canned and dried beans.

Another suggestion would be The Garden, a relatively new place that opened up on the main street - Kaya Grandi. I don't remember the whole menu, but I think they are completely vegetarian, or at minimum seem to be focused in that direction.

The Beefeater in the Kaya Grandi has always some vegetarian dishes on the menu

Garden Chef, on the main street, has excellent
vegetarian dishes...but has no brown rice...if you
are looking for a properly balanced vegetarian
meal. You can find tofu and a variety of beans in
the Cultimara supermarket in town...if you're in a
private apartment with a kitchen...but there is no
brown rice anywhere on the island. You will have
to bring your own brown rice.

An alternative...that worked out marvelously for
me...was specially prepared takeout meals by Erich
Arrias...that was arranged for me by Rietje
(reeji), the owner of the Antar Atman Bhavan
apartments where i was staying. She can be
reached at 717-6867, or call Erich at 717-7331
(Taxi 31 / cell: 5607178).

Just bring your own brown rice down with you and
he will cook it for you, instead of the usual
white rice (tho' I imagine medium-grain would be
the easiest to cook for him). His meals was one
of the highlights of my stay...a variety of beans
and vegetables in rich local flavorings. I highly
recommend it

Thanks for the suggestions. Our veg friends did not starve by any means while on Bonaire (I think they put on a few pounds but won't admit it). In fact we are plannning a return visit and other suggestions are welcome. Amazingly, one of their favorite places turned out to be the Beefeaters. Me, I just had to try the goat....Maybe that's a thread I should start for myself....best local/traditional food places.
