I will be coming to bonaire Nov 8th to the 15 and would like to know if there is a japaneese resturant or sushi bar on the island.
Thanks

I wish but nope..there are many cool local and Indonesian spots so you will be able to savour other cuisines but not Japanese. Someone told me Buddy did sushi..not sure..

I think Karen still does a Sushi Sail on the Oscarina. We did it the year before last, and it was GREAT. Will definitely do it again next year (feb-March!!! Yeah!!!)

Josie, I had heard that as well but Oscarina was no where to be found all summer!

Is the customary wide variety of fresh seafood used in sushi in the States or Europe available on Bonaire? A variety sufficient to support a sushi bar for US and European sushi eaters??

Planning on opening one, Glen? :)

Dock of the bay does sushi every once in a while. BTW sushi in papiamentu means garbage...

The variety of fresh fish is not available on Bonaire. The other problem is the lack of supplies to go with it like sushi rice, wasabi, seaweed wraps, etc. When we make sushi at home, it usually centers around a freshly caught tuna and we dig out frozen shrimp and salmon along with fresh veggies to round it out.

Curacao has a great Sushi bar. It is Cravings in Salina...my second stop each time I am on Curacao...

Mind you, Linda neglected to add that we stock sushi rice, wasabi, nori, burdock root, oshinko, inari pockets, and other speciality sushi-related items at our house in the event a fresh tuna comes our way :-)

We (Mango's) are doing a "Japanese" special: sushi (variety, made to order), sashimi & seared tuna (in either island spices or roasted sesame seeds) by reservation only (min 2 person, 1 day's notice). We too have 'private reserves' as do Jake & Linda for this purpose, including the essentials like saki, wasabi, dried seaweed, sticky rice & pickled ginger. We buy the fish the day of the dinner (usually tuna).

Hi Matthew,

I'm at Buddy as a solo starting tomorrow afternoon till the 16th. Look for an old-fart wearing a white & green baseball cap with "SLS" on the front, madly driving a Daewoo minivan with a bright yellow RANDY felt pennant on the antenna.
(I didn't find a suitable cheap CHICAGO pennant so I just made my own)

See you there

Hi Annie-yes, Mango's is open every day of the year for lunch & dinner, including holidays. I'm just not sure yet if we can do sushi those exact days, first, because we'll probably have special holiday meals planned, and second, because of supply (and the lack thereof--remember, we have to count on fishermen fishing, and they ususally don't on those particular holidays). Christmas Eve might be fine-it's not really a big holiday here, as we celebrate the first & second days of Christmas (Dec 25 & 26). Nothing's set in stone though, we'll do our best to accommodate everyone!

Annie,

Maybe Ruth would make sushi at Mangoes if you bring fresh things down with you. Then sushi in heaven!! Worth asking.

Annie,

I was referring to a variety of fresh fish, octopus, etc., that Ruth herself, above, says is problematic!!!

I have had sushi (actually it was sashimi - without the rice and seaweed) at Mangos - and it was divine!! Really fresh and wonderfully prepared. We just asked for it a day ahead or so. They did a great job of presentation and the serving was huge!! I wasn't sure about fresh fish on the island, because of all the restrictions on fishing (due to the island being largely preserved), but there are certain areas where fresh fish can be caught. We enjoyed fresh tuna!!
Enjoy!!

There is no place that is off limits for fishing except from private property and from dive piers where divers are sometimes in the water. Local fisherman can be seen almost everywhere.

'No place off limits' for 'private' fishing but restrictions on large scale, 'commercial' fishing???

I think that commercail regs are in for a test now that Curacao is involved in signing agreementsw with spain, etc.
