If you are referring to the new Indonesian snack in the nicely renovated blue-painted building north of Kaya Grandi, then I second your vote! One of my colleagues at Buddy Dive had suggested I try it, and I was very pleased she did. I was happy with everything we ordered (don't ask me what it was...) and the combination of spices the chef used was incredible. Also I had the first egg roll that tasted like the ones we Americans are used to getting in the states. (No offense to the other Bonairean snacks or chinese restaurants.) We got our order to go, had a cold beer while we waited, and everything was still nice and hot when we got home. Enjoyed every bit and plan to make a habit out of going!

I, too, highly recommend this wonderful restaurant (Warung Ketjil) for its great food, friendly owners and its convenience and outdoor ambiance. I will again post this pic of the man who runs this great place (Salamat Makan?)......what a smile!! Can't wait to return to his place this November. I was considering asking him to cater our Thanksgiving dinner on the island!! We brought home one of his menus to be ready for the next time....but, there is no question as to what we will order...it will be the Rijsttafel for two! CaroleSalamat

Michael: Where there is a will, there is a way! I'll bet we can shape them into a Pilgrim, if we truly wanted to!! I am dead serious about a Rijsttafel Thanksgiving dinner. I think it would be fabulous. We will throw in a turkey, too, of course for tradition's sake...and for enjoyment, too, but think it over......hmmmmm. Yummmmm. the HOTTER the better for me, too!

PS How is your countertop now?? Is the hole any bigger now?? LOL. Here is Joe enjoying his Rijsttafel at Warung Ketjil last May 2001. CaroleJoe

Just a side note. I never had Indonesian food until I went to Bonaire. However, since living in Jakarta for the past year and a half I have found that the Indonesian food that is on Bonaire is a Dutch style. This is from observation and discussions with locals.

It's kinda funny, when tourists would ask to 'eat Dutch food', they would be directed to Indonesian. I think what is similiar is the spices and sauces.

Here in Indonesia, Warung Ketjil means 'Small Place' (Warung means place and there are thousands of warungs along the streets) and Selamat Maken in "Bon Appetite" in Bahasha Indonesia. Maybe you misundertood his name or he misunderstood your question. You did have a ? there. :)

The traditional Indoneisan restaurant has a menu that is strange to me, not to the locals - whole fish (small) fried, boiled or grilled is a basic fare. Also, you eat with your fingers - one gathers vegetables, mixed in with the rice and scooped up and eaten. A box of tissues (kleenex) is for your use on each table. It really is kind of neat.

Of course you have the ever present sate with the peanut sauce :) and they have a soup that is fantastic, mixed with vegetables, corn on the cob and a 'nut' that has to peeled before eating...hahaha, I thought it was good when I chewed it all up. There are also boiled fish balls that are very tasty. And as in the Dutch versions, there are a lot of deep fried items, too.

It is difficult to find "Dutch Indonesian" food restaurants here. From what I know, they are not frequented by the local population, but by Westerners and the locals say it's not so good. Cultural thing, I'm sure. So, if you ever come to Indonesia and you want to eat local food, it will differ slightly from what you had in Bonaire.

The spices are great! And the food is delicious, most of the time. Indonesians eat 'all' of the fish or animal - I mean all, nothing really goes to waste. I pass when the innards soups and stuff come by my way.

Having said that - what you eat as Indonesian food on Bonaire is absolutely great tasting food and is considered Indonesian food by most. The hotter the better, for sure.

Diana's favorite is the head of the whole fish, eyes and all. A lot of the indonesian food here is also influenced by Surinam cooks as well.

For some strange fate, when we are served fish, the head always seems to point my way and has this stange habit of staring at me.....

I guess island people eating the whole fish - head and eyes - is no different than sodbusters eating the whole pig (except for the squeal of course).

Thanks - forgot about the Surinam influence.
