And from what I understand (from The Reporter), a Dutch developer by the name Gerard Van den Tweel is considering opening a supermarket to engage in competition with The Warehouse. It's to feature Dutch, local & US products under the name of the Albert Heinj market.
Hey, I say bring on the food! The more choices & competition the better for the consumer. No location yet provided.

We loved Zhung Kong last trip, they really do pack a whole lot in a very small space.

That deli sandwich has me HUNGRY! "parma ham sandwich with pesto and olives, lettuce, and tomato" Oh yeah! YUMM!

I'm with you Vince, the more choices the better - and spreading them around a little would help too. One of the oddities to staying in Sabadeco is that food shopping was --way-- away. We spent many an afternoon driving South. Though I imagine anything new would open South as well because of all the increase in density around the airport.

It's all good! :-)

We ate at Eli Deli today for lunch. Everything was fresh and delicious. Ana is a very nice lady, the service was excellent. I believe they are opened until 6:00pm M-F and 4:00pm on Saturday.

The deli serves breakfast daily and is opened on Sunday's until noon.

Albert Heijn is a large grocery store chain from Holland. There is one in Curacao.

OK, the article also said this:

quote:

Two new grocery stores are also making shopping much easier for visitors without transportation who are staying in the northern “hotel row.” The Hato Mini-Market & Bakery has just opened across the street from Eli Deli in the Sand Dollar shopping mall. This mini-mart offers many of the staples that visitors will want in their rooms for quick meals and has plans to add a bakery soon.

OK, Michael Gaynor, what's the skinny? Is the "Hato Mini-Mart and Bakery" where the old Sand Dollar Grocery was??? Did it get a face lift inside?

Tink, I can answer that, It is across the street in the mini mall. TIS has a store where the old Sand Dollar Grocery was. So now, you got two TIS's on island. TIS ~ The Island Supplier for those who may not know what TIS is.

Will have to venture that far north and see the bakery, heard the Deli sandwiches were expensive, you pay extra for all you want on your meat...Hmmm, in the price range of $12 a sandwich, so will have to see.

Michael, is that true? Have you had a sandwich there yet? I would be interested in the prices please. Heck, may just check it out myself tomorrow and report back.

Ruth & Pietri...Well as an American I'm not familiar with this chain, but "Upscale" in the food dept. is music to my ears!!!
Hopefully the project will come to fruition.

I would say that Albert Heijn is about the same kind as Publix in the US with of course more European products as it is a Dutch company

If it's like Publix, that will be awesome!

Debbie, thanks. The way it was worded I thought it was next to Michael. Twelve bucks for a deli sandwich, welcome to California!!!!

AH is not so upscale comparing with American supermarkets. I haven't visited Curacao to see how well organized AH is. If all plans are real, hopefully it has something of Trader's Joe and Ralph's. In Holland AH is the biggest supermarket chain, but it totally lags variety of fresh products.

I'm not sure where everyone got $12.00 for a sandwich, the sandwich I had (the parma ham with olives, pesto, etc.) was something like FL 9.75, so a tad over $5.00.

I also had breakfast this past Sunday at the Eli Deli, the Big Papa Omelet (ham, cheese, mushrooms, peppers) with fresh squeezed orange juice and two pieces of a BIG toasted baguette was FL 24.00 (about $14.00), including tax. There are more economical options available for breakfast, too.

Thanks, Susan! I had heard from a local person here on island, but haven't been there yet, so that is why I asked the question. That is a great price, they should do well. I so miss the Sandwich Factory. :-)

Visted Eli Deli today, love the little tables with umbrellas outside to enjoy your meal. Prices vary depending on what you order, but a decent breakfast or sandwich can be had there. Wish them much success. I talked with Ana, the owner and she was very helpful, they also offer tuna salad and chicken salad if you don't want cold cuts on your choice of bread. We did not eat there as we had a ton of stuff here at the house for lunch, but they were doing quite well.

Hey, Debbie, so glad you stopped by. And don't forget the shrimp salad (made with large shrimp), in addition to the tuna and chicken salads. That'll be my next one to try.

And while we're on the topic of sandwiches, for those who don't need a quick sandwich, but are willing to wait a few minutes in a garden setting, try the Bonaireaan, open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10:30 to 2:00 PM. I believe it's subsidized as it's a training school for young children to learn how to take orders and prepare food. Chicken, tuna, and crab salad sandwiches are about FL 5.50-ish (about $3.00), tostis (sort of like a grilled cheese sandwich) run about FL 3.00 ($1.75), if I remember correctly, and they offer a variety of "pancakes" which are more like crepes--I liked the pumpkin crepes--2 large crepes for something like FL 2.00 ($1.25). One has to be patient, as the kids come and take the order under the watchful eye of an adult, and then they prepare the food, again under adult supervision. The kids are sooooo cute. It's located on the main road just north of Divi Flamingo Beach, where it becomes one way north, just before hitting "town."

Also speaking of Sandwiches....the new bakery at Sand Dollar Plaza has been making great breads for the past week. I am ashamed to say that I am addicted to the Stok Brot (like a French Bagette (SP).
