Does anyone know about the BBQ just past Jibe City. I have heard it is good, only open a few nights a week or maybe just one day. Also any good sushi bars one the island. We will be there the first week of November.

The bbg at windsurf place is on Wed. only. They also have fantastic lunches! Only Sushi on island is Imperial Japanese Sushi Bar adjacent Zee Zichts across from Karels Beach Bar...I am addicted!

Bonaire Windsurf Place stopped their BBQ quite some time ago. Roger told me maybe Nov. the new owners will start it up again. He also told me they serve sashimi during the day.

I spoke with the new owners and as I stated they are definitely doing the bbg on Wed. He may even start before Nov 1...will be having lunch there tommarow and get the final report. Sashimi is not sushi..btw the word sushi in papiamentu means garbage!

True, but most people mean sashimi when they say sushi. Sashimi is sliced raw fish, and sushi is the style of rice.

I can't strongly recommend any sushi bar in the Antilles. I'll eat at Imperial every once in a while, but you have to stick with their shrimp, salmon. Some of their various white fish can be good sometimes, but I always have to look at them before I order.

The best sushi I've ever had is in a little sushi bar on the lower floor of the Shinagawa train station in Tokyo. I go there every chance I get. The chairs are about 16" wide. The sushi floats by on the cheapest, tackiest looking sushi boats I've ever seen. They won't bother to pour you tea, because they have hot tea dispensers built into every spot around the bar. It's always crowded as hell, and you wait in line until a spot opens up and the waitress shoehorns you in between two strangers. But, for all that, they have the freshest fish I've ever eaten, beautifully prepared, they happily do custom orders (as long as you speak Japanese well enough to ask for it), and it's only 120 yen/plate (about $1.00).

The nori sold at Warehouse is pretty good, as is their sushi rice. I have found that their frozen botervis, duradu, and blue marlin is all quickly enough frozen that it still has a good texture when raw. I've actually picked up quite a fondness for raw botervis.

As I said before, since I am not frequently in Japan and the Imperial Sushi is close, they get my vote. I do travel to Curacao and frequent Cravings and always enjoy their bill of fare.

Kevin
Just out of pure curiosity, would tell us about your connection to Japan? If I remember correctly, you also speak Japanese. No mean accomplishment I believe.
Mick

There's even one poor kid that takes Japanese lessons from me once a week.

I was born there. When I was very small, Japanese was all I spoke (toddler level, but still speech). My older sister was heavily retarded, and absorbed most of my parents' time, so I spent much of my time with our maids, who only spoke Japanese. After we moved to the States, I spent a year or so without speaking, because no one there spoke anything I understood. Ultimately, I wound up completely forgetting Japanese, and I function as a native speaker of English. I started to study it again as an adult. I'm not fluent, but I get by, and can read and write reasonably well, too. I've managed the Japanese/American trade for three companies, and consulted for a Japanese-American business development group, so I have traveled there frequently as an adult.

If you like sushi, you might like the fish ceviche and the tiradito de pescado (fish strips) at the Peruvian restaurant, La Plazita Limena. Both dishes use raw fish marinated in lime juice, the latter with a very hot pepper added.
