We will be in Bonaire the first week of September and would like to celebrate my wife's birthday with dinner at Richards. I have heard that they close in September. Can anyone verify this and how would I contact them to make a reservation?

Thanks,
Ron

Richard closes the month of September for vacation... Ron

You have got to be kidding me!!

If I had known that, I would have scheduled our trip for a different month!

A Bonaire trip without Richard's is like....well....actually, I can't even think of a comparison.

Well, as long as Pasa Bon Pizza is open, I guess we'll be able to struggle through.

55 days and counting!

Dave - I think you will survive, there are so many other great options. Richard's gets my vote for the most overrated restaurant on the island.

John,

I'm not sure I WILL survive!!

I eat at Richard's everyday that I am on the island. Except Mondays.

You are one loyal customer! Go to Capriccio instead and raid the wine list.

Ron, I asked Richard last night when he was closing for vacation in September, and he said Labor Day - so you might want to give him a call and see if he is open when you first arrive.

Folks, Dave is a one restaurant kind of guy you know, NEVER would he explore other restaurants (well, maybe to KFC)...but Dave, remember, I'm one up on ya in the employment line at KFC:-)

Ok, I'm here-of course I've been watching this thread. And thinking about Dave's less than adventurous eating habits (i.e., anything beyond beef, chicken or pizza). Dave, didn't you avoid Richard's for years (till I dragged your butts there) because you feared he served only seafood (which you despise)? If Richard follows his usual pattern: he'll be closed from Sept 1-22. They'll probably re-open on the 23rd, but w/o Richard-he'll be back around Sept 30.

FYI, you're both on the short-list for new hires.
;-)

Ruth,

You're killing my fun!

And all that beef, chicken, pizza, (and pork) had better be cooked extremely well done......

Ya.... like KFC actually has a "list" of new hires. I figure it's pretty much show up and get a job!

(except for me and BC - something about being able to count to 10....)

We were on island last year for our 10th wedding anniversary and had hoped to have Richards as our big dinner on the 27th of Sept but they weren't open.
The fabulous Ann Phelan set us up for a wonderful dinner at Captn Don's. They had a very special table overlooking the water with gorgeous orchids as a centerpiece. The entire staff knew it was our special occasion and treated us like royalty. The food was tremendous, watching the tarpon swim by, they gave us a complimentary appetizer that was as good as it was beautiful and we finished it off with drinks at the bar listening to the dj. (sorry for the run on sentence :-))

That's my long-winded way of saying to get in touch with Annie - she's the bomb!

Also, we now have one more thing on our list to dow when we return to Bonaire (someday!)

Dave, remember, it's also about working ALL of the holidays, Regatta, Carnival, etc. I have to ask, do you have your own transportation? I do...and Michael is willing to watch the kids too:-)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Dave Goodwin (Experienced BonaireTalker - Post #266) on Friday, July 11, 2008 - 10:24 am:     Edit PostPrint Post

BC - I guess that's the determining factor. I don't work holidays...... especially not on Bonaire.

Also, I have made a personal promise to never show up on Bonaire again during Carnival. It was fun/interesting when we experienced it. But once is enough for me.

But having once owned a deli, I do have health department experience and knowledge, so I may actually edge you out in that department. Plus, only Mike Rowe has done more dirty jobs than I have. So that has to count for something.

Hey, why in the world are we trying so hard to get a job at KFC on Bonaire?

And would you REALLY want to work for Ruth? Not sure I could handle that.....

David...when I told the gal I would work all holidays, she did look at me funny...now I know why.

I used to waitress and bartend, but if you owned a place, well, you are one up me there...plus, I've had a lot of jobs, but none like Mike Rowe...OK, 2 points for you on that one.

Wait, yea, why are we trying so hard to get this gig...I do think working for Ruth would be good. Do you think she'd let us have all the FREE polars we want when on duty?

Actually, that sounds pretty much like what I have when I go to KFC. Maybe I AM en employee.....

Dang, no free Polars? Dave, I think we need to seriously rethink this whole KFC work exchange program...I always get the chicken wrap and a polar, it would be hard to have to switch to another meal, and not have beer to boot....

Ruth, I'm coming up with another nickname for you:-) teehee:-)

BC, I already have re-thought the KFC gig and am now officially withdrawing my application. If I can't start at manager, then I won't work. I'd rather start at "owner", but Ruth has that one pretty well handled.....

Good luck with the nickname - regardless of what it is, she won't answer to it anyway.

Hey Ruth, my brother said he would be happy to bring you some KKs in September. I would bring them, but they never make it out of Chicago if I'm carrying them......

Oh jeez you two--is "tired" a nickname?

Dave, you know what it takes to be the owner here, pony up and we'll include the house! Be warned though, as part of the franchisee approval process, you must work at every station in a KFC until you know it by heart (and HQ is satisfied of your qualifications). Jan and I spent 2 mos (w/o pay) working a KFC in Trinidad many years ago. At least I'm offering you a job with pay...and I don't care if you wear the apron or not!

KK's will be most welcome. I too don't carry them down myself, because I'd justify eating them before entering security at the airport (hmmm, box looks too big to get thru x-ray...).

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Dave Goodwin (Experienced BonaireTalker - Post #278) on Thursday, July 17, 2008 - 2:18 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

And you'd include the house???

I would hate to see you and Jan homeless...

Tell you what: I'll trade you 2 Midas shops in Illinois for your KFC & house. Sound fair?

I'll even throw in my house to sweeten the deal.

We can talk about it in September over a box of KKs and some Polars.

But let's be real here, Ruth. You know as well as I do that you couldn't live without the KFC. You ARE Mrs Fried Chicken. Everytime I pass a KFC or see a KFC commercial, I think of you. You are an international KFC icon - heck, the national franchise would probably fail if you sold out....

So, in all reality, you would never sell.

But as a second thought, have you ever approached a reality TV producer about doing a reality TV series around your KFC? That would be a hoot! You could call if "Deep Fried on Bonaire."

I'd tune in each week ;-)

"Deep Fried on Bonaire"....Dave, I'm calling FOX today and pitching it. I'll give you credit for the idea, but I want producer rights...that would mean I'd have to have an "extended" stay on bonaire to assure things went smoothly. You can have co-producer rights if you want. We'd probably have to make Ruth "Mrs. Fried Chicken - Executive Producer" though, it would only be fair.

Ruth, the thought did pass through my head oh...for about a nanosecond....of trading our house, boat, sea doo, dogs, here for your house and KFC....no way could I live up to your reputation, the bus would fold in about a month I'm sure.

I can't belive you and Jan worked KFC w/o pay for 2 months. Great concept though, I like it.

KK, neighbor went to the fair yesterday, they saw a booth offering 2KK deep fried with chicken in the middle....YUUUMOOOO...[read gag]

Tell my future co-workers hey ;-)

BC,

Two months without pay is nothing for a small business owner - especially when you are just getting started!

I can't count the number of months we have gone without a paycheck in order to keep the business a float......

But the nice part is we get to set our own hours - all of them!

Co-producer? Not sure I like second billing. I've gotten use to being at the top of the local food chain.

Oh gross, Krispy Kremes fried together with chicken? Gag indeed! What a waste of both KK's AND chicken! I'll tell Ry-Anne & Anuska you said hey. All I need to say is "the other crazy-American-seniora" and they know who I mean. (Dave's the "big-loco-Americano.")

Dave, you're right about the paychecks. Wish I had kept count of how many we've missed (I think that was part of the point HQ was trying to make: it's more than just frying chicken...).

Could you specify what they mean by "big"?
The "loco" and "Americano" are self explanatory. But the "big" part bugs me a little.....

Maybe I need to increase the mileage of my daily runs!

A funny anecdote:

A few years ago, we were wreck diving in Lake Superior. There was about a dozen of us who would make the yearly trek to challenge the chilly Upper Peninsula waters.

Our good friend Rodney has always been a big guy - he had a 3X wetsuit. He hadn't been diving for a while and didn't realize that he had grown larger than a 3X could accommodate. Of course he didn't realize this until we were on the dive boat, out on Lake Superior, getting geared up.

After he finally squeezed into the suit before the dive - and it wasn't a pretty sight - he off handedly remarked, "Man, after this trip, I'm going to have to start getting on the exercise bike again."

Being the good friend that I am, I sympathetically put my hand on his shoulder and told him, "When you do get back on that bike, Rod, take a little advice from me.

"What's that?"

"Your results will increase substantially if you move the pedals this time!"

Rod broke into a huge laugh.

Last year he lost 85 pounds....... He told me that he was moving the pedals REAL fast!

I didn't charge him for the advice. Again, I'm a good friend.

Dave, well, you can share the producer byline if you like. Having my own business years ago, and since Michael went out on his own four and a half years ago, I know all too well the "no paycheck" thing. When Michael gives me a check, I just about faint. I sort of want to frame it, kiss it, lick it, I want it all. Brings me to tears at times.

Since I've been called worse things than a Crazy American Seniora...I'm Ok with it. Yea, give those crazy Ry-Anne & Anuska girls a shout out. I'll have to make sure I stop by when they are working next time too, and thank them for helping me fill out the app...even though I didn't get the job...phhhhhthththttht!

Dave, good man...and good for your friend. He probably should send you a trainer fee at least though...I mean, you told him what to do and it worked.
