Just arrived in Bonaire today on third trip in as many years. This was the first time we tried Bambu, and I have to rank it up with the greats on this island. We started with fresh asparagus soup. The tips were not overdone, and had a delightful crunch, while a swirl of cream finished the delicate flavor. Next came the blue cheese salad, from which I forked a rather impressive large white chunk in without paying much attention, since I wasn't really sure what it was.

Well, it was a delicious piece of mild flavorful blue cheese. Topping the salad was wonderful sweet crunchy shredded fried carrot juliennes, a first for me and a very tricky tasty start.

The main courses were pan fried grouper in a white wine butter sauce, with cubes of fresh tomato (sauce duglere). I have never been set with a dedicated fish knife before (except when fishing, of course) but it was unnecessary as the fish was so delicate a fork was all that was required. My wife had the dorado with a mild dill sauce, creamy white. I am not a fan of dill, but hers was also spectacular. My grouper was as good as any fish I've had anywhere.

We tortured ourselves by splitting a lava cake at the end. No room, but couldn't miss it, and since we'd been up all night, our resistance was down. Good thing, as it was perfect, lying on a swirl of raspberry sauce. Even the presentation was marvelous, with the outline of a dessert fork in cocoa powder present on the plate.

As for service, it was as if we had the place to ourselves. We had three servers, all eager to help in any way.

Definitely a place to remember, on the water with the view of the sunset. It is going on our special list. We can only hope that tomorrow's dinner is as delicious.

Your report should be in Wine and Food.

Some would say all of connecticut is
"Darkest"
especially when compared with Bonaire. We are from around the Hartford area.

What a handy reference website. Thx for sharing, Mel. We just picked up a smaller wallet size version of a similar reference guide at the local boat supplies store.

Just heard about the grouper from a local divemaster. There are plenty of other items to choose from, now that I know.
Regards,
Rich

Elaine, we just got back and I am happy to report that, according to all the local restauranteers, non of the "catch of the day" is caught off the reef... they are from the deep blue on the windward side of the island.
