I am interested in suggestions for cheap eats. Last year, I did PB&J most nights. I did go to Pasa Bon Pizza, Maiky Shack, Antriol Catering and El Fogon Latino. I will also try China Nobo. (Suggestions for China Nobo would be helpful).

Any other ideas for the diver that would prefer to spend money on diving rather then eating?

Julio's and Luigi's located right downtown are great places to try.

Local snack on Jean B. F. Vitte--forget the name.

Bobbejans on the weekends!

Mi Banana

Exito bakery is a favorite of mine for their sandwiches. Three or four guilders.

Lola, Luigi's closed a few years back. He was in Antriol but last few times I went by he was closed. The one on Vitte is Dollar's Terrace. I have not eaten there in a few years so cannot comment. Lize's home style Surinamese cooking amazes me always.. 717 5632

Ann,

Please tell us more about Lize - where we can find her, for example.

Also, please remind me of the name of the BBQ place on Kaya Korona.

Thanks,

David

China Nobu will make almost anything you want, but make sure you talk to the wife if you phone your order in. I talked to the husband last year and got some really odd things when I ordered the same menu items that we have ordered for 5 years. We liked the pork tenderloin, light sauce with bean spouts. My vegetarian daughter liked the lo mein and fried rice.

China Nobo lunch is a great deal for 5 Guilders (~$3). Great food.

My favourites were:

Kos Bon So in Rincon. So many ring the praises of the Rose Inn that some of the others get left out. This place serves food from the grill, cold beer of course and is dirt cheap.

Mi Banana on Kaya Nikiboko Nord. Again, food from the grill. Look out for the sopa di dia (Soup of the day) which is superb, especially the fish.

Sisys Bar in Rincon is also a great night. Simple by plentiful food and as always, great people.

Suriname in Nikiboko has huge portions of Suranese style food. Their roti is great!

Wow! Some great responses!

I will check out Exito. I missed it last time.

Being a flex-a-tarian (I eat meat but prefer not to) it is good to hear that the veggie Low Main and Fried rice at China Nobu is good.

They have Roti on Bonaire? Is it the "West Indian" roti which is a flat bread wrapped around a "curry" filling? Normally the filling is goat or chicken curry which is a milder curry then "Indian" curry with more flavors thrown in.

Lot's of Barbeque suggestions. Are they mainly beef and goat? Do they do chicken and fish?

We did wander into a place in Rincon which was right next to Rose Inn. Rose inn was closed and the gal out front said the place next door was very good. Well, she was right and we had a great meal. Excellent chicken! No idea of the name of the place... no one seemed to speak much english and our Dutch/Spanish/etc is not very good.

Anthony, it fit many of the places you described "...food from the grill, cold beer of course and is dirt cheap. "

I will check out some of these in January and report back!

I have not had great roti on island. For some reason the roti I have had here has bones in it and other odd items. It's not West Indian style as I know it. Maggie and I love this place in Antigua called Roti King. It's massive and full of chicken and lovely curry.

Lize's is off Kaya Amsterdam heading towards Mentor Bar. Lize can give correct directions as I forgot the name of the street.

The fish at El Fogon is excellent and an amazing value! We ate there 2 nights (of 7 on island) on our last trip.

Sue in NJ,

Yes, I agree. Notice in my post I mention that I went to Pasa Bon Pizza, Maiky Shack, Antriol Catering and El Fogon Latino.

El Fogon latino soups are also very good. My wife and I have had both the sea food chowder and the ox tail soup. Wonderful and a good value.

Did you find any other Cheep Eats?

Ann.

Before Spanoek changed hands, Erna and Sonny used to have Roti night every Thursday.

I too couldn't be bothered with bones in the chicken so they used to make me beef roti.

Spanoek for me was great when they had it.

The new Surinam rest. that opened on Kaya Princess Marie (where the old Sandwich Factory used to be)is quite reasonable. Annie, I never had Rotie without bones. The traditional way the surinamese eat it is with their hands. Everything is served separate and you use the pancake as a scoop to pick up the various ingredients. It is much like the Swahili cuisine of East Africa. Be sure to save a last bit of pancake to use as a napkin to wipe the remains off your chin!

Did anyone mention Bistro De Paris? Lunch there is surprisingly cheap, plentiful, and tasty although the dinner menu is much more, shall we say, fancy in taste and price.
