We take our first trip to Bonaire in September. This site has been such a wealth of info on snorkeling sites, accomodations, etc....I wonder if anyone has any recommendations for vegetarian dining? Thanks!

P Kim Welcome to Bonaire talk at the bottom of this and every page of Bonaire Talk there are some icons, one is Keyword search.. I just did a search for "vegans" and got a lot of hits about dining.. FYI there are quite a few vegans and vegetarians that frequent this forum and I am sure someone will answer your question in due time.. in the mean time please check out the Keyword search..

I can highly recommend the Garden Cafe for Middle Eastern food (hummus, babba ganoush, felafel, etc) and pizzas -- IMHO a great place for vegetarians. Or go to Rum Runners at Capt. Don's and get a salad and some brick oven pizza loaded with veggies of your choice (as well as an outstanding view of Klein Bonaire, tarpon, and divers both day and night. Lots of places can satisfy your vegetarian needs if you ask. And while many may sing the praises of Casablanca, I would recommend avoiding it as it is definitely the meat-o-rama!

I'll second the recommendation for Garden Cafe. Raj (owner) is vegetarian. Much lebanese food is actually vegan, but you definitely need to ask. Pumpkin Kibbe is not to be missed, BTW.

Aside from that, you can get some places to do special food for you. We've had some great meals that way. We are vegan, so getting a pizza made without cheese over at Rum Runners is an option for us.

Generally we plan to cook most of our meals when we're on a trip, and eat out only a few times during a stay.

Kim, our daughter is a vegetarian and has joined us many times on Bonaire. She has never had any problem eating out. As I recall her favorites are Garden Cafe, Crocantinos, and Blue Moon.

Welcome Kim,
You will have no problem on Bon. Veg is becoming part of every restaurant now. Enjoy!

Hi Kim

My Wife is veggie and doesn't do too bad here. She tells me that her favourite dish on the island (apart from me...ha ha) is the pasta at Pasa Bon Pizza. City always have a good choice and Caprichio does an excellent pumpkin ravioli. Spanhoek do an excellent vegetable fried rice and, further afield, Kon Tiki does a huge Vega sandwich on it's lunch menu which is also a favourite.
If you are eating at home, it is now possible to buy Tofu, soya mince and veggie bacon from some supermarkets.

It is my understanding that Cactus Blue is now serving" Tropical Tacos", which can be made vegetarian style. Sounds yummy!

In general, over the years, we've found that pretty much every restaurant we've been to can accommodate vegetarian/vegan, especially if you call in advance and warn them you're coming. I'll throw in another recommendation for the Garden Cafe -- yum, and no calling ahead required!!! Now I'm going to have to dig out my mujadra recipe to satisfy the cravings that just popped up... :-) Their passionfruit juice is most excellent!

I have a vegan client who comes each year and loves Croccantinos and Garden Cafe.

I can't believe how sophisticated Bonaire is in the veggie department. We've been sooo many places that had one begrudging option for veggies, and sooo many places that can't get fresh veggies at all....Thanks again for all your help! Kim

Pasa Bon makes a great vegetarian pie; Lost Penguin has an excellent Greek Salad pita among other veg-friendly ietms; China Nobo will customize just about anything they have to accomodate you!

Kim, There are alot of restaurants around the island that offer veggie dishes...
I just ask if I don't see anything "specifically" veggie on the menue and most establishments will gladly accommodate me.
Captain Don's, Lions Den, Richards, Cappriecio's, are some of our favorites.
