Just curious what is best spot for wine and spirt's and beer purchases? Is this just a trip to a local grocery or do you have to go to a specific government run store to pick up your poison of choice?

You can buy booze just about everywhere on the island.

I like the selection at Bonaire Gift Shop. It's on Kaya Grandi, a blue bldg just south of Mona Lisa. Looks like a regular gift/tourist shop, but has a surprisingly big selection of booze.

Ruth, I agree:-) We went to a wine tasting event at Harbour Village last year with Jake and Linda, and the man that owns the shop (can't think of his name now) really knew his wines and had a great selection to taste. That's where we buy it now when we are on island (unless of course we have some delivered and ready and waiting for us by the Antilean Wine Co) where we are staying:-)

His name is Deepak, and yes, he really does know his booze (a very important quality to live here).

Deepak...thanks Ruth. He had some of the best Chardonnay that night. Nice man as well:-) I also never get out of Bonaire Gift without buying a trinket or 2 in the gift shop...LOL! The staff that works there are also really friendly and nice.

Any real wine buffs as well as your interested beginner can do no better than the Antillean Wine Company.

Always a huge selection of wines plus spirits, and beer. They also have a selection of Italian oils and vinegars. They also have ongoing offers, recently selling Guiness at 1 naf a can!

As already mentioned, Saturday night is wine tasting, 6.00pm to 9.00pm.

Speaking of beer....whats up with the 8oz beers? Nobody could give me an answer as to why.
I found a reasonable selection of beer and liquor at the Warehouse, and it local priced.

A.E.,
12 oz beers in the heat = warm beer at the last swallow;
8 oz beers in the heat = finished beer before it gets too warm.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

I'm more than willing to do a taste/coolness test next time I'm in bonaire. Two 8 oz beers is all I can do though...

Mare

The story I heard was price resistance about fiv years ago. 12 oz beers would have crossed the 2 guilder mark, and they didn't think locals would buy beer at over 2 guilders, so they shrank the bottle.

There are 10 oz, 12 oz, and 16 oz bottles available on the island. Somebody not bound by rules may be able to tell you where you could sample them.

Mare,
Unfortunately, there are some of us that can finish a 16oz beer in ambient temps above 100 degrees and have the last drink as cool as the first. We like to to refer to ourselves as finely tuned machines in this regard. :-)

I'm glad to hear there are beers larger than 8oz on the island.....I'd hate to be responsible for a shortage while we are there! ;-)
