Got back from Bonaire last week and have to report that we loved La Guernica. So much so that we ate there twice (that's rare for us, we prefer to skip around and try different places). Dinner for four of tapas (they'll tell you 4-5 are a meal, trust me 2-3 are plenty), drinks and dessert totalled $74US...that's a bargain in my book. I recommend reservations to get one of the best tables.

Thanks for the report Gini. We are heading down next week and I am assembling a list of places to eat. Has anyone else had any experiences at La Guernica?

I ate there in October and loved it too! The paella was great and so were the tapas. I'd go there again.

I ate there last night and spoke with my waitress about how the food has steadily improved since the restaurant first opened. She said they had kept changing chefs, so I guess the quality of the chefs has improved. Certainly excellent now!

O.K. What exactly is a tapa? Never had one! Guess I am deprived? Anyway, didn't have time to visit this place last time I was there. Looks like they are very busy and not sure what else they serve, but most say it is tapas, so if anyone has the time, let me know what exactly it is and what else they have on their menu? I have a son, age 11, who likes steak, chicken and FF. He loves to identify fish in the sea, but won't eat them yet! Have only gotten him to eat shrimp, so I guess I better say that is the one exception for him. LOL

OK, here is my brief lesson on tapas, Debbie! It's a traditional Spanish dish (or rather several dishes) that has it's roots in the working class. Fisherman, on their way home, would want to stop at a local bar for chat and a quick bite and tapas developed from that. It's small dishes of potatoes, cheese, seafood, etc., usually grilled or bite-sized, and you can get a little taste of everything plate by plate. It's really taken off in the States in the last decade or so, especially in the cities, and now the menus have all kinds of cross- cultural "fusion" and big plates of paella, etc. So, I'd say it would be a great post-dive snack, or with other add-ons, a great big happy Mediterranean meal! Although every time I say I am going to a tapas bar my mom still thinks I am saying "topless" bar! Ugh!

Oops, before I get my head chewed off by a random tapas historian- diver, here is a link to a more formal history of tapas:
