Does anyone have any opinions, good, bad or indifferent, about China Nobo? Any favorite dishes?

We have been there for lunch lately and not happy with the prices or the quality. We were VERY surprised as we have always LOVED it in the past.

There is a GREAT local Chinese place that not many know about. It used to be an EXTERMELY small snack in Terra Cora. He just recently moved to a bigger building with a large sitting bar and seating with tables. He makes is Lumpia (sp?)(similar to an egg roll) from scratch. It has all fresh veggies in it with a hint of curry. It's amazing. Also, Ed brought me home chicken and broccoli one night. It had to be the best I've EVER had on the island.

Oh, the name...PUE Snack Restaurant (pronounced PU-E). His prices are excellent and he has takeaway. Lots of food for the price too.

Directions: heading north from the airport, take the 1st right that says Tera Cora. Come to the next 4 way intersection, make a right. About 1/2 mile down on your right you will see a BRIGHT pink building. That is it. It's a local snack, so nothing fancy, but MMMMMMMMMM...it's good!

Scott,

China Nobo is just great. Sate' and bami are simple and fast takeaway (out). Eat in (with AC) ask what the special is that day. Many years of great dinners there. Ask the owner (Mr Chan) how he got to Bonaire from China via NYC. It is a great story.

I will be eating there in 784 hours.

Bud

I find China Nobo's portions small..but I like the food. I prefer Nadia Snack and Spanhoek.

sliced roasted pork is good - served with bean sprouts.

I have found the owners very accomodating - they always make my son white meat chicken tenders with french fries & have ketchup. he doesn't like dark meat, which is the standard chicken on the island.

coming from the NYC area, I found their prices reasonable & their portions in line. Their hot & sour soup is quite different than what we get in this area. It did not go over well with our family.

I like China Nobo because the owners speak English, AND, know what MSG is. They use it (like all the other Chinese here), but, when asked to make something without it, will do so, with the explanation of, "it'll take longer because we have to defrost _____ to make it w/o MSG." Many of the other Chinese speak/understand Papiamento (not English), but even when I speak that language, I can't get them to understand what MSG is.

Ruth,

Just for the curiosity of this simple cook, can you explain the 'defrosting w/o MSG' part????

I like CN both for the English and that their recipes seem to have spent less time in Indonesia than the other restaurants'.

Kitchens usually prepare meats ahead of time (defrost, marinate, etc for the night)-CN's chicken dishes are made with chicken that's been prepped w/MSG already, so when we go or call CN, and request "chicken w/cashew nuts, no msg"--Annie tells us it'll take an extra 20 minutes because she has to defrost a chicken in order to make my dish w/o MSG.

Scott, Smack and I enjoyed a meal there last October. I believe I had a lo mein dish (jeesh I can't remember breakfast). The prices were reasonable, the size of the entree was smaller than one might receive in the states, but was more than enough, if you know what I mean.

China Nobo is excellent, but just lately Ann and Wayman have been in Holland for the birth of a grandchild, which might have affected the cooking. When Ann supervises or personally cooks the meals, she will do them to order, create dishes just for you, and makes sure you are happy. She grew up in Hong Kong, so she speaks English fluently. I agree with those who say that makes special orders from her easier.
They are lovely people!
Tish
