I just got back from my yearly visit to Bonaire.

Bummer Richard. Pasa Bon is one of our favorite places on Bonaire. There's an American guy originally from New York (I think) who works there and is always very cool to us. Maybe he wasn't working when you were there? I'm surprised to hear this but will keep it in mind next time we go to Pasa Bon in September. If the same thing happens to us, I'll report back. Actually, I'll go ahead and report back either way.

Hey Marcus, actually, I think it was the same guy, he had a New York-ish accent. Please report on your experience there.

Consider it done Richard.

That's too bad - we have been there multiple times and have always been made to feel quite welcome by Lisa and Joe.

Susan, we asked to be seated under a fan and got a gruff reply. After the meal I tried to use my credit card and initially he refused because the bill wasn't big enough and then changed his mind and grabbed the credit card from my hand. Maybe he was having a bad day, but he shouldn't have taken it out on his customers.

I, too, love Pasa Bon Pizza, but the owner does get stressed out if there is a large group of people and you said large, then the regular customers, people calling in for take-out, kinda just seems to overwhelm him at times and I bet you hit just one of those. I was on island by myself this past May and called to order pizza and he answered the phone, gave him my order and he just was like over 2 hour wait, very busy, and I know him very well, so I told him not to worry, I would catch him another night. He was relieved to hear that as he had a full house already. I don't know exactly how you were treated specifically, but if it was very busy and you expected him to just take his time, shoot the breeze, well, he would not be able to do that as he would have many things to attend to. I find that if I have a party of 6 or more, the earlier the better is best. Especially on a week-end night. I still will go there as he has always been the best with me, and it is great to go to a place where they even remember your name 6 months later! Sorry you had a bad experience there. Exactly, how big was your party? Did you call ahead to let him know that you were bringing a lot of people so he could prepare. His staff is limited there, you know.

Debbie, I didn't take the entire group, it was just five of us and the restaurant wasn't very busy at all, maybe six other people were there.

Richard, thanks for the clarification. Glad to hear the pizza is still good! It's amazing how first impressions really "stick" with you, sorry yours was a bad one. He really is a great guy. There are other places to get pizza. Capt. Don's has pizza, never had it so can't comment on that, and there must be some others, just can't think of them right now. Debbie

We had pizza at Cap'n Dons in May; it was pretty good. We tried to go to Bon Pizza one night but they were closed, so I can't compare.

I think you have to remember... this is a pizza place right next to the equator. The room where the oven is is small, and I can only imagine how brutally hot it gets in there.

Susan, as I said earlier, I won't speak badly of Bon Pizza, but I will not go back either ( first impressions are lasting impressions ).

I think I remember there being a hand written sign saying that don't take credit cards. However, I might be mistaken.

Not only does Pas Bon have the best pizza but also the coldest beer on the island. During busy periods it's worth the wait. Go early. I have seen them run out of dough before. That is evidence that everything is made fresh daily.

Too bad...yummy seafood pizza and love to hang with Joe and Lisa. Always been treated the greatest. Give them another chance Richard.

After going to Pasa Bon each time I visit the island and sometimes more than once, I have never had a bad experience. I do think that sometimes one customer can perceive a bad experience while another customer perceives the issue a completely different way. While not taking away from Richard's negative experience, the number of positive responses posted so far on BT outshine the negative. I am sure I could post a slightly less than positive review to a few restaurants on Bonaire and people would come back with other opinions. Maybe we just let Richard seek food elsewhere and we'll continue to patronize Pasa Bon and their WONDERFUL FISH PIZZA!

We went twice during our honeymoon trip last fall, enjoyed the pizza both times. Treated fine, left completely satisfied.

I love their fish pizza, too!!!! The sounds of fish on a pizza didn't sound very good to me but once I tried it, I got hooked and have to have it every time I go to Bonaire!

Darlene, haven't you ever heard of ....... anchovies?
|
By DARLENE ELLIS (Extraordinary BonaireTalker - Post #1539) on Monday, July 18, 2005 - 10:02 am: |
Sure Beau but I never get anchovies on pizza I just eat anchovies in Italian Crispellies where there is just a little dab of anchovie in delicious fried dough. I just made myself hungry

What sounds does fish on a pizza make Darlene? Dang, I must have messed up my ears to have missed those sounds of fish on a pizza. Do they sound different than in the ocean?

And just in case people misinterpret Geoffrey's post as an attack: we both know and love Darlene (and love to tease her sometimes).

We've eaten at Pasa Bon Pizza several times during each of our 6 trip over the last 2.5 years and PBP is, IMHO, the best on the island - but you DO have to be tolerant of that New York-style attitude - he's not a bad guy at all but he DOES get stressed by crowds (and maybe walking, breathing, and tropical climes) and he definitely shows a lot of whatever is the opposite of gregariousness ... but it's worth it. I mean, he doesn't go out of his way to be rude but maybe he's really not happy being a restaurateur - at any rate we love the pizza they produce, so when he's in THAT mood we just ignore him. Usually however, he's not too bad ("he" because his name slips my mind at the moment - Freudian?) It's also an excellent choice for dinner a bit later in the evening after a night dive and most of the other places are closing.

This would be the place for a Pasa Bon Pizza Plus Bas story ... one evening Bas had set up a shore night dive out at Fish Hut - we were thinking about going but we dove elsewhere instead. After the dive, we showered off and hit PBP - but we had an interminable wait (let me tell you about all that rum and coke on an empty stomach!) and before our pizza finally came, we saw a guy walk out with a stack of pizzas - with the obvious bottleneck removed, it was only a few more minutes before our food arrived. Next day we discovered that those pizzas were destined for the crew at Fish Hut, ordered by Bas!
