We will be making our 6th trip to Bonaire at the end of July. This will be the first trip for our two children ages 10 and 12. We are interested in bringing a cooler with items from home. Any information on how this is done and what we are allowed to bring from the US to Bonaire on American Airlines?
Thanks for any info
Kim

Kim, the airlines do not allow dry ice in the coolers so you should freeze as much as possible. The cooler is counted as one of your 2 allowed checked bags. You may want to secure it with duct tape and have an extra roll handy in case it is opened for inspection.

I have used a soft sided cooker with great results. I pad the outer area with towels or t- shirts for extra insulation, and the frozen items are fine after the trip from northern California, via AA. There have never been any questions or restrictions from either the AA or Bonaire customs.

REMEMBER! AA/AE do NOT GUARANTY that your checked luggage will arrive the same day as you do; this year, they delivered 3 out of 4 of our checked bags two days after we got there. Therfore, lost a lot of food.
Now, before a bunch of you start asking why we bring food; Jean has MANY food allergies, thus we bring food that we know she can eat until we can search and find food on Island.

I found a soft sided cooler(with wheels and extending handle) for our trip to Grand Cayman last year. Used it as a carry on(fit in the overhead with room to spare. We had the frozen items sealed in a plastic bag in case of any melting, but everything stayed solidly frozen. We had an itemized receipt from our market for the meat we took down. Customs did ask for the receipt. Worked fine.

I can't re-find the link to this entire article, but is a cooler considered a box that would be prohibited on AA's new box and bag embargo?

------------------------------
American Airlines (AA) reminds passengers about the box and bag embargo on flights to certain cities from June 11 through 14-Aug-2005. Passengers traveling on American and American Eagle to certain destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America will not be able to check boxes during the embargo period due to heavy summer loads and high volumes of checked baggage to specific destinations. There is a year-round box embargo for flights from NY Kennedy to all Caribbean and Latin America destinations.

My first two trips I did that, too. I froze a few things and carried them on. However, now I find that I like shopping in the local grocery stores and the fruit stand. You can find almost anything you want and it's fun to try to figure out what things are.. lol.. of course if you have things you can't live without, by all means bring them. (for me it's Pringles, but I believe they have them on island, I just bring them in case of emergency.)
