Just thought that I might start a thread to get everyone's thoughts on the subject of lunch places. In all of our trips to Bonaire, we are always trying new places for lunch, and find that in the middle of a day of diving, many places are just too darn slow. Yeah, I know we've all seen here on BT the discussions about meals being a time to stop, slow down, and savor, and that's fine for dinner, but somehow when you're on a dive vacation lunch is not a time when ya wanna kill a couple of hours. For us, that eliminates places like the Lost Penguin (which has great food) that just seem to take forever during a time of day that you just want to get a tasty bite and get back to diving (or snoozing, for that matter!).

I'll start the ball rolling by putting in my votes for Rum Runners (especially since we stay next door at Buddy Dive), Maikey Snack if you're diving down south, and your own place for lunch if you've stocked up on lunch makings.

Who's got some favorite ideas for relatively quick lunches, either eating in or taking out?

There is KFC, Subway and a few places in the mall downtown that are quick and easy to get to.
Whataburger used to be a quick place but I understand it is closed now. You can always get cheese and bread, peanut butter, sandwich meat, etc and eat in your room/condo.

I always vote local: Takivi Snack on Kaya Hulanda behind former Consales, Antriol Catering on Kaya Mariana off of Lagoen, Julia's Place, Luigi's across from Flamboyant on Kaya Grandi to name a few...

A smooshed, warm peanut butter and jelly sandwich that sat in the truck while I did my first dive ...

Julios, Dock at the By at Buddys (have always had pretty fast service there), nice thing about julios, KFC and subway, is that they are open all day, so if you miss the lunch hour, you can always get a bite to eat. Maybe try the new place at sand $ where the green parrot used to be...don't know how fast they will be...

Kelly and Martin,

I love Lost Penguin too but the times I have been there it hardly qualifies as a "quick lunch spot".

Just thought people should be aware of that since quick is in the title of this thread.

Great food though!

Belinda, both times I was there I told them I was in a hurry for lunch, and they got my food out really quickly. I was by myself though, don't know if that matters. :-)

Kelly,

I'll have to try that next time!

The first time we went it was 45 minutes before they could seat us at a table and then another hour before we got our food. There was a local dive shop employee there on his lunch break and he ended up leaving without his food because they didn't get it ready in time.

In their defense, we were there right at noon so they were very, very busy.

The second time we went later in the day but it was still almost an hour till we got our food.

I think both times I went for lunch it was early afternoon; once there was one other couple there, and once I was the only one in the place so I sat at the bar and chatted. (hard to believe, I know... ME TALKING...and to strangers no less) LOL

Kelly,

Who'd a thunk it?

I guess we need to be less conventional (lunch at noon) and more Kellyish - sounds like a great plan!

Thanks for the tips.

36 days and counting!!! WOO-HOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Cynde, it is in Nikiboko. It is a "dive" as we say in New Orleans.....meaning a little rough on the outside. Really great chinese food and they use very fresh ingredients with NO MSG ! Much less oily than most chinese food here on the island.

To get there:

From town (Kaya J.A. Abraham or where Flamingo Beach is) go down Kaya Industria (where Consales and Warehouse are and also the entrance to Lisa Gas). Pass these establishments till you get to the intersection and then cross over. (You'll pass China Nobo on your right and Gibi's old place on your left.) Follow this road until it comes to a T. Surinam Bar will be at the T on the right.

I'm not so good at explaining directions, so let me know if this doesn't make sense :-)

The satay is also good here :-)

Enjoy, Annette

Bobbejan's barbeque is open on the weekend and had great food. You can order it to go or sit down and enjoy. This is one of the few places that didn't burn up hours of time when you have other things to do like dive :-)

Nochie's inside Cultimara! The students cook a meal and have salad (tuna, chicken) sandwich/subs available. Also if you get there early enough you can get a whole roasted chicken cheap.

A quick snack I like is the pastechi at the bread department in Cultimara. I think it's about the same as an empanada, a seasoned ground meat patty in a puff pastery shell, with raisins, no less! Probably bad for you, but last Sunday, just back from Bonaire, my weight and blood pressure were okay. I don't monitor cholesterol levels at home, though.
