Everyone is referring to Amstel in Bonaire as they do Red Stripe in Jamaica. Where I come from Amstel is the light version of Heineken?? Am I in error ,or am I in for a new taste treat or is everyone on Bonaire so incredibly healthy all they drink is lite beer?? Actually I don't really care cuz I will be there in 23 days and I can't wait but I am sort of curious. You know I check the webcams and the weather about 5 times aday and that is not helping the time go by any faster

Amstel and Heinekin are owned by the same holding company but they are distinctly different beers. Amstel pioneered cold brewed lagers while Heinekin made predominantly bottom fermented ales. With consolidation comes some blurring of the brands, but Amstel still brews at least 10 different types of beer with light being only one of them. Check out:

The Amstel here is brewed in Curacao and made from distilled sea water. The Heineken is imported. I prefer single malt scotch!

Don't tell all the single malt guys or there will be a mutany for sure. In my opinion the Cardu boy's blend only adds to the hmmmmm....factor.

Speaking of Amstels...about how much should we expect to pay for a bottle of beer in a restaurant? What about a six-pack at the market? Trying to plan my beer budget for our trip in July. Thanks in advance for your help!

And, since the goal is to collect a wide variety of different cans/bottles (and, of course, to sample the various contents), it's fortunate that most of these are available as single cans or bottles. Most of the cans I brought home this year got dented, but the large Heineken bottle made it OK (next year, will go for the bigger one).

I still have to chuckle when I see Polar beer -- up here in Massachusetts, we have a soda bottling company called Polar! If you're ever on interstate 290 through Worcester, MA, look for Orson the Polar Soda polar bear on the southeast side of the road...

Ran across a brew called Amstel Bock recently. Loved it! Has anyone else run across this and is it available on Bonaire?
