Everyone is referring to Amstel in Bonaire as they do Red Stripe in Jamaica. Where I come from Amstel is the light version of Heineken?? Am I in error ,or am I in for a new taste treat or is everyone on Bonaire so incredibly healthy all they drink is lite beer?? Actually I don't really care cuz I will be there in 23 days and I can't wait but I am sort of curious. You know I check the webcams and the weather about 5 times aday and that is not helping the time go by any faster

Amstel and Heinekin are owned by the same holding company but they are distinctly different beers. Amstel pioneered cold brewed lagers while Heinekin made predominantly bottom fermented ales. With consolidation comes some blurring of the brands, but Amstel still brews at least 10 different types of beer with light being only one of them. Check out:

Be there March 21 to April 1.

The Amstel here is brewed in Curacao and made from distilled sea water. The Heineken is imported. I prefer single malt scotch!

Jack-
The Amstel on Bonaire is not Amstel Light, but regular Amstel. Are you from "the other island"? (Go Whalers!)

Why Yes Kate I believe you would know us as the island that kicks your b..t in football every year.
Actually it boggles my mind that the powers that be on both islands can't be of like mind as far as things like the SSA go.
Enough small town politics, I can't wait to go take my turn at being a tourist for two weeks before we start another season here. Your profile says your a bartender so you must be right in the middle of it during the summer?? I work for a boatyard so when I get back we will be in full gear. Ho Hum!!! I believe you are overlapping with us down in Bonaire can we catch up with you?? We would look forward to it

Jack-
Ditto on the SSA debacle! Yes, I will be re-charging my batteries for the month of March on Bonaire before the onslaught of the summer and all the attendant craziness. Someone will be serving ME drinks for a change! Would love to get together down there. When do you leave? I leave Feb 28. We can all meet somewhere, or you can come over to the house (Belnem). Where are you staying?

Just to make you all feel better.

I have already notified Amstel that I will be arriviing in few weeks, so they should step up production now. (Would'nt want to run out out ya know)

I will verify production is stepped up so, so no one will need to chase me down, or beat me to the store to get an Amstel.

By the way, it is my expereince that only Amstel light is availbale where I live, yet only Amstel (not light) is avalable in Bonaire.

The Amstel in Bonaire also seems to have a slight salty tast. It is either from the distilled water or just in my head.

Don't tell all the single malt guys or there will be a mutany for sure. In my opinion the Cardu boy's blend only adds to the hmmmmm....factor.

BTW Jack,

With a name like Brewer(or Brewski, is it?) I would think you would know all about fermenting!

My buddy Jim Bright on your "Big Island" tried to convince me that the stuff he was having me drink was real Amstel too......not! I heard that Curacao beer is like making love on the beach.....F****ng near water! ;)

Speaking of Amstels...about how much should we expect to pay for a bottle of beer in a restaurant? What about a six-pack at the market? Trying to plan my beer budget for our trip in July. Thanks in advance for your help!

And, since the goal is to collect a wide variety of different cans/bottles (and, of course, to sample the various contents), it's fortunate that most of these are available as single cans or bottles. Most of the cans I brought home this year got dented, but the large Heineken bottle made it OK (next year, will go for the bigger one).

I still have to chuckle when I see Polar beer -- up here in Massachusetts, we have a soda bottling company called Polar! If you're ever on interstate 290 through Worcester, MA, look for Orson the Polar Soda polar bear on the southeast side of the road...

Ran across a brew called Amstel Bock recently. Loved it! Has anyone else run across this and is it available on Bonaire?
