Quite frequently I dine in City Cafe (the NAF 10,= meal). Let's say 3 times a week. And yet still none of the personnel knows my name or even greets me spontaneously. I just find that so weird. I always thought that working in restaurants and cafe's was all about making you feel welcome

I remember being served at the City Cafe once by the same person who had waited on us the night before at Pasa Bon. She recognized us right away was all happy to see us again.

One thing you might try and do --- is ask the server what their name is.... Tell them yours..Ask for that same server the next time you are there.... Strike up a conversation with them if it is not busy... And it doesn't hurt to leave a good tip... That is something that every server remebers

Like Jan says, Waldo, are you sending the right message, or do they maybe think you want to be left alone?
And of course, that tip thing...

When dining alone, I always strike up a conversation with my server. Sometimes I bring a book or some paperwork with me, but it seems that they actually remember you more if you are alone and chatty. Maybe that's because I'm wearing the flamingo hat? I don't know.

Ah, I have to admit that I always read while I eat and that the world around me disappears entirely. I'll try to be a bit more receptive of my surroundings next time. Thanks for the reactions.

Waldo, put that book down and start chatting! Smile a lot, and as Jan says, leave a big tip. :-)

Most people who are reading while dining appear unapproachable.

So start smiling and let us know how our great experiment turns out! LOL

Waldo last February at City Cafe four of us ordered lunch, then three meals were served, then we waited, and waited, then finally asked where my wife's Ceaser Salad was. They hurridly threw it together and was 1/2 the size as the day before. Great location but sometimes lacking that special touch.

Dear talkers, As a manager of City Café I'd like to reply to all of you. We know that City Café, just like any other company, is not perfect. BUT we do try to improve our product and services all the time. The best way is to listen to comments of our guests, preferably right away. As regular guests you should know that there is always a manager present! Thank you all for your support and see you soon at City Café.

Rene, I always applaud when any business managers responds on BT to comments about their establishments. Welcome aboard, and don't be shy.

Waldo....City Cafe is a great place to people watch. If you go 3 times a week, YOU must recognize the wait staff..If you tend to be shy, try eating at the bar. Singles tend to do that, and will start a conversation. You are not so isolated. Ditch the book!

I thought the people at City Cafe were cool. We had no problem (January 2004) in two visits, and the service was courteous. Maybe is the book... I always get along very well with the staff at the places where I grab a bite.. And we're talking about Manhattan! Give the folks a smile, they'll give you a big one in return. I hope you return to CC. Coach Izzy

Thanks a lot Seb, I must say that Bonaire talk is a good way of learning about our customers feelings. I'll be checking the comments more often from now on. René.
