Hi everyone, my new fav drink is a Mojito. Does anyone serve this in Bonaire. Detuin used to but they closed.

2 to 3 oz light rum (Cuban if you can get it)
1 fresh lime, halved
1 to 2 tsps sugar
a big handful of fresh mint
seltzer

Put the sugar, a fistful of mint leaves, and a dash of seltzer in a big, substantial glass. A heavy double-rocks glass is a good start, but a Guinness-type pint glass is better. Muddle the contents (ideally using an official bartender's muddle, which is wooden and looks like a miniature red billy club) vigorously. The handle of a kitchen wooden spoon, or a big metal tablespoon, make reasonable substitute muddlers.

Squeeze the juice out of both lime halves into the glass, then throw one spent hull in. Add the rum, then add ice to fill the glass. Fill with seltzer, stir, throw another sprig of mint on top, some rum and serve.

Is fresh mint generally available? I've sporadically seen fresh herbs in Culti. Mojitos are very good.

Ann,
While we were there last month, my wife asked for one at Mona Lisa's. The Bartender said he'd make it if we knew how. I had never heard of it and Stefanie didn't know the recipe. At least they were willing to give it a try.

I am going to ask Will and Sue to serve them when they open their new grill. I need a Mojito fix once in awhile. That is a good thought Seb. I better grow some myself.

OK, it looks like maybe a "true" mojito is made with yerbabuena, but spearmint can be substituted. I am pretty sure I've never had one with yerbabuena.

Locals call mint "yerbabuena," so if you had a mojito, you've most likely had yerbabuena. We used to have mojito parties (at home-this was pre-Mango's), but that was when Consales had a regular supply of fresh mint (packaged the same as fresh herbs you see now in Cultimara), and then they stopped. I gave up looking for it years ago. It does grow wild here, so you might just have to ask your neighbors, or, Annie, bring down a package of mint seeds & start growing 'em...you bring the mint, I'll bring the rum....
;-)

Or better yet, have someone who is coming thru SJU with a stopover of a night or two, or a long layover who is going to Condado or Isla Verde, to get some from a market and bring it down. Plant some and use the rest for Mojitos. If someone will buy me a ticket, I will be glad to run the errand.

Ran into this problem at Cafe Havana-was in the mood for a tall mojito and was dissapionted when the owners(great people btw!)said they had trouble getting mint!
I jokingly told them I would send them some in the mail as I have 4 different kinds growing in my herb garden.

Recipe
2oz white rum (cuban if possible)
1 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
3-4 sprigs fresh mint
2-3 tblspns sugar or simple syrup
club soda lime and mint for garnish

muddle the sugar, mint, rum and lime juice in the bottom of a shaker-add ice and shake (like a martini)
pour over ice and top with club soda
garnish with lime and mint sprig
Add a little more sugar if you like it sweet!
some recipes call for a dash of bitters...but it is not traditional

One of my favorite cocktails in the tropics!
These have become VERY popular here in California
(gotta be trendy you know!)

There is a bartender at the beach bar at the Plaza that is from Cuba, don't remember his name. He will make them but sometimes needs a couple of days notice to get the mint.

Be careful growing mint, it is very agressive and will take over an area. You can pull it up by the roots and it has a tendency go come back.
