I went through the archives and it looks like Margarita Mix is not readily available in the stores but that was a year ago. Can anyone confirm that is still the case? I don't mind bringing my own Tequilla but it's not worth hauling the mix as well.

Thanks!

I am surprised you have not brought out the militant army against the party on Bonaire. I mentioned jello shots and was put to task without even understanding of where I was going with the subject. Good luck my friend, there are still a few people that want to enjoy their personal passion while on VACATION!

Chris

Margarita Mix? Not sure if it's available anywhere in the UK - if we want a margrita, we get out the Triple Sec or Cointreau and mix it with tequilla ourselves with fresh lime juice. Yum!

Chris,

If you can not find what you are looking for, try a "Waborita" (recipe can be found on the "Red Voodo" cd sleeve) it is similar to what we used to serve in a club I "tended" in, in the 80's:

SAMMY HAGAR'S "WABORITA"
2 oz FRESH LIME
2 oz Cointreau
2 oz Tequila

Shake with ice, serve in a salt rimmed martini glass (or larger vessel :-{)} ), garnish with a slice of lime.

Randy, If people want to rag on me for my post let them.

For what it is worth, due to my being allergic to alcohol I have not had a drink in over 15 years. That does not mean I do not enjoy being in the company of those who can imbibe - the opposite is true. I still enjoy hosting beach bar parties and playing "Mixologist" for my friends.

This recipe almost makes me thirsty:-{)}

OOPS: Almost forgot the "Red Rocker" also says, if the drink is not up to your standards, just add

MAS TEQUILA;-{)}

Tom

I am with you Freddie, there is nothing wrong with driving. If you are like me and no longer drink, yet still enjoy a good party, be a Designated Driver.

For me a tropical vacation means Margaritas. From the responses here it looks like limes are avaialable, for some reason I was thinking that was not the case. But if I can get limes I am set.

I am from California and I have just grown up with Mexican food, that is my only gripe about Bonaire: no good Mexican food. (I know people will disagree with me here but as of my last visit I could not find any good, from my perspective, Mexican) So, I'm looking to do it myself more this time. I can brings a few key ingrediants (jalpenos and Tapatio!) and then make my own.

I understand Chris. I was spoiled in the 70s and 80s by having a sister-in-law who was a native of Mexico. Have not had GOOD mexican since.

Tex-Mex = ;-{(}

Hi, Chris! I can relate to your love of "real" mexican food and stuff....we are stuck in New Jersey but when we visit friends in San Diego County we go nuts with the "real" stuff and buy tons more and freeze it and lug it home in a collapsible cooler on the plane. We have been known to make the crew drool in envy while eating our own "real" Burritos instead of the airline meals!

New Jersey can't cut it when it comes to Mexican....they try to charge over $15. for their version of a burrito and almost $7. for an enchilada. Not even good, let alone being ripped off by the prices and the small size of what you are buying. My husband and I chuckle to ourselves when our friends ask us if we would like to join them for a Mexican dinner.....we pass every time. They don't know the difference, you see...so they just don't know! LOL.

Here is a little something just for you to enjoy....and any others out there from the Left Coast or those who "know" of the Left Coast way of life.....Carole

CALIFORNIANS

So as to not be outdone by all the redneck, hillbilly, and Texan jokes, you know you're from California if :
1. Your co-worker has 8 body piercings and none are visible,
2. You make over $300,000 and still can't afford a house,
3. You take a bus and are shocked at two people carrying on a conversation in English,
4. Your child's 3rd-grade teacher has purple hair, a nose ring, and is named Breeze,
5. You can't remember . . . is pot illegal?
6. You've been to a baby shower that has two mothers and a sperm donor,
7. You have a very strong opinion about where your coffee beans are grown, and you can taste the difference between Sumatran and Ethiopian,
9. You can't remember . . . is pot illegal?
10. A really great parking space can totally move you to tears,
11. A low speed police pursuit will interrupt ANY TV broadcast,
12. Gas costs $1.00 per gallon more than anywhere else in the U.S.,
13. A man gets on the bus in full leather regalia and crotch less chaps, and you don't even notice,
14. Unlike back home, the guy at 8:30 am at Starbucks' wearing the baseball cap and sunglasses who looks like George Clooney really IS George Clooney,
15. Your car insurance costs as much as your house payment,
16. Your hairdresser is straight, your plumber is gay, the woman who delivers
your mail is into S & M, and your Mary Kay rep is a guy in drag.
17. You can't remember . . . is pot illegal?
18. It's barely sprinkling rain and there's a report on every news station: "STORM WATCH,"
19. You have to leave the big company meeting early because Billy Blanks himself is teaching the 4:00 PM Tae Bo class,
20. You pass an elementary school playground and the children are all busy with their cells or pagers,
21. It's barely sprinkling rain outside, so you leave for work an hour early to avoid all the weather-related accidents . . .
22. Hey!!!! Is Pot Illegal????
23. Both you AND your dog have therapists . . . and lastly,
24. The Terminator is your governor.

I'd rather be in the Caribbean......

Thanks Carole, I'm glad you understand the food! I was expecting a bunch of but you can get nacho's posts... I did research for a while in Mexico and I just love the place and the food. I get a kick out of mexican places in Europe, very expensive and while I have never eaten in one I have looked at the food and that is all it takes for me not to eat the food.

Can't say I agree with all of the you know your a Californian if but they are funny (and more truth than I would like to admit). Scarey thing is you really do need to be making a lot to get a decent house. They had a nice 1.5 hour slow speed police chase on TV on most TV stations here in LA yesterday too. Finally, I only drink Fair Trade Coffee. I love it here!

Chris, Lindsay, and Tom,
While in Cozumel, at the airport on the way home, I wanted a margarita.
I was handed a drink called a margarita and it was the strangest margarita I have ever had.
It was tequila, triple sec, and SEVEN UP!
MMMMmmm it went down easy and, in a pinch, makes an interesting substitute margarita.

Chris and Carole,
While on a vacation in California, at Yosemite National Park, I was in a parking lot in front of a restroom and listened to a few valley girls discussing their tans:

> Ohhhh, nice tan! Like, howdja get it?

>> Okay, so I like, lie down on my towel and count: 99, 98, 97, 96, 95, 94, 93, all the way down to one and then, like, I turn over!

> Bummer! All that counting!

Chris, Tom, and Carole,
Some of the BEST Mexican food we have ever had was in Sonoma County, California. Good food, the freshest ingredients, and moderate prices.

Randy,
I made my first Jello Shots last spring. My 24 year old niece taught me. The catsup cups at McDonalds make perfect jello shot cups! Tasty and potent little treats!

To all,
We don't drink and dive. As soon as the 7 oz Brite gets opened, the pool is closed. I should mention I drink only one Brite. All the sunshine + all the diving in the day (and evening) + one Brite = bedtime.

Good night all,
Mary W

All margarita ingredients are here, from scratch or ready-made. You might just have to hunt a bit, and realize that most ready-made mixes are sold to bars, so that may make supplies low from time to time. After beer, it's the second most popular drink we sell at Mango's.

I think the jello-shot thing invoked ideas of girls walking around with trays of 'shots/shooters' in neon colors, which is not available here. Beer, margaritas, wine & whiskey make up probably 95% of drinks sold. Not much of a market for novelty drinks.

People who live here do "party," I would say in 'marathon' style--in it for the long haul, as in what I think of as "maintenance drinking" (enough to make you relax/happy, then paced so that you can continue on that plateau w/o becoming fall-down-drunk). Friends will meet after work & go till 2am if it's a nice crowd, especially on weekends. The bar scene for the 18-30ish group is late night, starting around 11pm (after the 3rd shift ends). Not many tourists can outlast a resident drinker, or make it that late because they're too wiped out from diving & the sun.

Ruth, Jello shots are not liquid. They are jello. They are made from a standard Jello mix BUT, instead of all water, vodka is added.
If I recall correctly:
Mix the jello as directed dissolving the packet in hot water, stirring until all the gelatin is dissolved. Then add vodka instead of water in the second step.
Pour into little containers and put into the fridge until set.
Yummie!
I wonder if it works if you use all vodka and no water. That would be a potent little jello shot.
Randy, check me on this. Thanks.

Mary W

Oh, I know that--I was the one on the other thread telling him where to buy the little cups to make jello shots in if he didn't bring his own.... I was trying to explain why something like jello shots aren't a bar item here, no matter what shape & form they're in.

I wonder if lime jello & tequila would work?......

I disavow any knowledge of such a thing.
The mature cheeseman prefers ice cold with a good squooze (I am old enough to make up words) of lime in a snifter......Sip it dangit sip it.

Cheese Meister,
Add one sunset on Bonaire plus a cool evening breeze with no mosquitos...
Sipping is definitely the way to go.

we go to a party every summer where jello shots are made from rum, vodka, and tequila. we color code them....green jello and tequila, orange and vodka, red and rum....seems to work. we have been able to buy margarita mix on the island our last two visits...never had a problem finding it but maybe i was just lucky.
