I have noticed on alot of the restaurant website menus that they have a "catch of the day". Can anyone tell me what the local fish(es) are in Bonaire that they are referring to and what type of fish in the US that they resemble in texture and flavor?

I'm sorry for such a detailed question, but we're from Boston and really love seafood.

Thanks in advance,
Nick Baldo

Hi Nick,

The fish in Bonaire is great. Usally, I have found grouper, wahoo and dolphin ( the fish, not flipper ...aka Mahi Mahi sp?) on most of the menus. I also saw fresh ,live lobster at one restaurant. I suspect you have had one or more of them. All of them are mild flavored, white flakey fish. You can usally find them fried or baked in some way. As for the fruits from your other post, unless I am mistaken, almost all of their fruit is shipped in from elsewhere, in any case, we had oranges, bannanas, watermelon and the best fresh pineapple on the breakfast buffet where we stayed. There is a fruit market downtown on the water frount that has a good selection of fruits that is fun to visit.

Herman

Since I am hanging around the website tonight, I'll jump in on this question, too. The most common local fish we find on the menus is wahoo, although yellow-fin tuna or dorado (mahi-mahi or dolphin, to some) also shows up. Sometimes grouper, but I have only found it on occasion. It may have something to do with the time of year, but wahoo seems to dominate the menus in January.
Wahoo is firm-fleshed, white meat, usually cut in steak slices as opposed to fillets. Nice, not too strong flavored---we marinate with olive oil, garlic and lemon juice and then grill it when we buy it from the local fishermen.
