how much is food (restaurants/supermarkets) on Bonaire?
can we eat simply (sandwhiches, salads etc) for
about the same as places in the US + a few dollars
more?
Is the food generally clean, or are there certain
places I should avoid?

When visited the food in the grocery stores is a bit more expensive than in the states. That's pretty much par for all Caribbean islands. Everything has to be shipped in. I don't believe there is any agriculture in Bonaire. I'm a very adventurous eater, but you should have no problem getting food you'll like. There are some very nice restaurants and they are many are casual with good and diverse foods. Bonaire while small appears to have very good standards for cleanliness and I'm not aware anything you should be wary of or any place you should avoid.

And if you just want a sandwich, visit Subway.. I'm very picky with my food.. Subway is clean and there's lots of choices!..S:)

You can pick up sandwiches at Exito Bakerey for a few quilder. You can also buy a wheel of cheese for about $14.00 (8lbs.) and buy some of the best bread in the Caribbean at any of the panderias or cultimara and eat your own concoctons quite reasonalbly.

What is panderias? The bread and pastries at Cultimara are AMAZING...And yes, Exito has great sandwiches for 3 Guilders or so..then stop at the fruit stand at the water front for Mangoes

We are from the metro area of New Jersey and find the restaurant prices on Bonaire are par with this area. The food is wonderful and very ecclectic. You will find quite a variety of excellent restaurants and local spots to enjoy your meals...dine in or take out (take away as they say on the island). For a small island the cuisine and variety is phenominal. The food stores are a bit more, as stated above, due to the importing of everything, but the variety is available there, too. Joe and I always lug two huge wheels of cheese home to the States on our return to NJ!! You will be pleasantly pleased with the dining experiences you can have on Bonaire. Carole

The Exito panaderia is one block away from Cultimara Supermarket, walking towards the sea and you will see it. Michael, the reason you couldn't find the word is because it's spelled panaderia.

There's also a good panaderia on Kaya Croes (road to Lagoen Hill) on the right hand side.

Thanks TC for the correct spelling. There are no fewer than 8 panaderia on Bonaire. Seruva also makes great cakes and french bread

Seruva is off of Nikboko Nord. Lagoen is on the road to Lagoen. I will have to take you on a guided bakery tour when you are here (of course only if the wind is down)!

The owner of the panaderia Exito is the new manager of The Beefeater - the opening was last night. You can have their well known sandwhiches there, you can have lunch and dinner. Prices are very reasonable - and the "kipmaster" from Bon Awa is there too.... in the evening they will serve different meats from the charcoal grill in the garden.

Definitely sounds like we will be checking out the Beefeater next May. Thanks for the update. Carole

Brigitte:

John and I will certainly miss you and Richard at the Beefeater. Hope they'll still have my cabrito stoba. Will Joiceline and Pierina still be working there? We'll be in Bonaire at the end of February for a month and will stop by the Coco Palm Garden to say "hello. By the way, what is a "kipmaster?"

Hi Carol
Joyceline is working the day shift at Karels Bar, Pierina is not working - takes care for the kids.
Somebody in the "Trip Report" invented the "kip meister" expression - kip is the dutch word for chicken. And if you make contact in the beginning of your stay I think I can prepare you a Cabrito Stobá in our little guest only restaurant at Coco Palm Garden - a Special for a special guest

Brigitte:

Thanks for the offer. We'll take you up on it. I appreciate the info on the girls also. Can't wait for February and back to Bonaire. Say "hello" to Richard. See you soon. Happy Holidays to you both!!

Carol
