I am also looking, Kathy! I know that de Tuin is closed (we ate there on Christmas Eve last year). My fear is that many places will be closed. Hope we get a good tip or two...

New Year's Eve is not celebrated here like it is in the US, although some of the resorts cater to an American style--Plaza has a big buffet party w/Latin band from Curacao, fireworks at midnight, etc. Divi & Cpt Don's all have fireworks & similar parties too, various entrance fees/buffet prices.

Here, most locals will eat at a normal hour (well, really continuously, from house to house most of the day/evening), go home & ring in the new year with their family & friends--go visit other family members, then go out for marathon parties with live bands that last till next morning (at various ranches around island, for +/- $20-30 entrance fee). These parties start around 2am... You've got to be a serious contender to last thru one of these. But being home with family is very important (and it always was here, not just after 9/11)--and the reason why many small businesses, including many family owned restaurants, will close well before midnight on the 31st, if they're open at all. I have served many starving tourists KFC (we're open till 6pm) because they didn't get a rare available reservation for 12/31. Mango's will serve a holiday menu till 10pm. Then Jan & I will go watch the fireworks from down on the town pier, like we've done for most of the last 13 years. And duck when Lola (from Capriccio), a closet firework pyromanic sets off her imported hoard down there. Then I'll go home & watch the ball drop in NYC an hour later....ta da!

It's hard to tell exactly when it's 12:00, as there's no official countdown, but it is one time when most of us are actually not on "island" time, but on "actual" time, and sort of when the fireworks peak. They're best viewed from Seru Largo, or from a seaside resort or the town pier, byob.

Insiders view re: Christmas celebrations local style for the energetic crowd (besides midnight Mass for the religious)... this is where the first round of marathon parties w/live bands start, around 10-11pm, on the 24th, and go till the wee hours (5-6am or later) on the 25th... betcha y'all didn't think about celebrating Christmas that way! I think this is why we need 2 days of Christmas, the second to recover!

Our Christmas & Christmas Eve menus are on the other topic of same/similar title; after that, our regular menu w/daily specials as usual--we'll probably serve a similar menu on 12/31 as on 12/24, but no official "party" (in other words, you can eat a normally priced meal, anytime between 5:30-10pm, at Mango's on 12/31, if you don't want to spend typical restaurant new year's eve dinner prices). A lot of divers like to be down just outside a resort, to see the fireworks from below, which is certainly a unique option to consider... ;-)
