I was dissapointed after reading about the famous Green Parrot barbeque on Saturday nights, that the restaurant was actually destroyed by a hurricane. Has any other restaurant taken the baton of this great tradition? We will be in Bonaire for our first time in December. Thanks.

Not at this time. It seems that rebuilding over the water will not take place, so no more G.P.
We will miss it.

The Green Parrot though destroyed, it was not by a hurricane. It was wiped out by a large wave action about a year ago. Den Laman, the restaurant next to Green Parrot and Sand Dollar has taken over and is ruuning a wonderful Saturday night B-que. We were there in August and it was great. There is also a rumor that they might be able to build a restaurant over the water where the GP was. If you have any questions please let us know. Have a great trip and enjoy Den Laman, they are doing a nice job

The rumour is true about a restaurant being allowed to be built where the old one stood.

Michael,

How about SDD&P being rebuilt where it
stood?

From what I understand (everything is rumours) there will be a dive shop built, but beyond that it is too early to speculate who will run it.

Hey, I subscribe to the Port of Call a paper out of Bonaire and it hinted about the new Chibi Chibi restaurant at the Divi Flamingo Casino might be opening and may resemble the Lost Parrot Restaurant taken out by the storm surge of Hurricane Lenny....If this is true GO SARA!!!!! We miss you and look forward to dining and celebrating your new success!

Lets get back to that barbecue question! Dock of the Bay at Buddy Dive Resort has a Friday night barbecue following their Open House Rum Punch Party and Rum Runners at Habitat has one on Monday night following their Open House Rum PUnch party. Fish, ribs, chicken, many salads, soup, dessert, rice, etc. Both are served on the waterfront.

We are looking for cheap eating while on Bonaire.
Anything burgers, subs or pizza. This trip is on a tight budget. Is the City Cafe still operating?

Peter, have you tried Karl's Grill? right across from the bar in town on the water. They have burgers and tasty chicken at a pretty reasonable prices, not fancy, the tables are outside and you can watch everyting go by for lunch or dinner.Grill food.

Try local snacks and some of the chinese places. Goat stew is nafl 12.50 and enough for two. By the time you get here, the new Guide to Dining on Bonaire should be ready. (around christmas) and it lists nots of palces (around 40) to eat.

Also, check out Bon Awa. We thoroughly enjoyed both takeaway and eating at their (fairly hidden) terrace behind the store front.

Thanks for the dining information. The goat stew sounds good to me but the wife would sooner eat scorpions and lizzards.

Peter,

I'll bet the wife didn't like ice cream until she
tried it.

By the way, you might just be able to
find the lizard meal for her. Ask around
on-island.

I agree with Michael about the local snacks and chinese places. Josie's recommendation is also good. One of my favorite local snacks is Dushi Place(although the sign still says Julio's Place?). It is on the corner in town across the street from Littman Jewelers. They have great burgers for $2.55,also chicken, beef, pork chop, goat, fish or conch meals with your choice of french fries or rice and coleslaw. Their fried chicken, porkchop and sate you can order a small meal which runs between $4.30 and $4.60 the rest of the meals are between $6 and $7. My favorite is their chicken sate(small meal-kuminda chikitu)with french fries and coleslaw and their delicious peanut butter sauce($4.30). This is a takeout place...no seating!

My favorite chinese restaurant is the one at Pauw Station(the gas station!). Most of the chinese places have small portions of a lot of their meals. The large portions are enough for 2 or more! Prices between $4 and $7. Favorites here...beef chow mein, beef alaparia(ask them to cut the beef in small pieces),chicken chicharon or their fried chicken.

Peter you asked about subs and pizza. There is a Subway in town and Cozzolis Pizza. Don and Ditta have a pizza place just outside of town with personal pan pizzas for less than $4. And there is always Kentucky Fried Chicken.

AARGH! Please don't tell me you are going to travel to Bonaire, and then eat KFC. Go for the stoba di kabritu instead: "try it, you'll like it!". (Make believe it is beef stew, only much better.)

My husband is not at all adventurous about food, but after years of trying to coax him, he had goat stew ( I was deightfully pleased )at a local snack by a suggestion of a friend and loved it. But I had to let him make up his own mind. I usually look for a menue that has something for both of us, I'm the more adventurous one when it comes to food. How about staying at a place with cooking facilities? save a bundle on breafeast and lunch that way.

Lorraine - there are a number of super places to stay that offer cooking facilities and more. Lagoen Hill Bungalows(http://www.lagoenhill.com/) is just a short drive from town and offers private bungalows that can accomodate you and your hubby or a whole gang of folks. There are nearby supermarkets from which you can stock to your (or your husband's) taste. They will meet your plane and also offer vehicles for rent and a number of dive package. I have use their facilities before and will use them again.
