My husband is a beer drinker and would like to know the beer choices he will have in Bonaire. He enjoys a pale rather than a dark beer.He would like to have a cold beer when we arrive!

Chris, tell your husband to definitely go for the Amstel Bright. With a lime. Happy hour at City Cafe, they are two for one. ;)

woozy beer? sounds like another spelling for what we used to call in high school 'woosie' like if one of your buds refused to do something dangerous or stupid (they go hand in hand) you would call him a 'woose'...get it now?
|
By Dean Botsford (Experienced BonaireTalker - Post #271) on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 - 12:44 pm: |
oh, to make it even more clear, woosie, could be considered a varient of the word 'sissy'(in polite circles) or rhyming word that starts wih a 'P'. Of course I only travelled in polite circles back then ;)

Woozy beer = Amstel Bright with a "Lime" stuff in it.. Horrid thing to do to a semi-decent beer.

Chet, I think you have a drinking problem. We must band together.

If you go to 'Lions Den' Kirk gets beer from the UK called Speckled Hen. Bob would recommend it highly, He drinks it at home but warns it's quite strong.

Kelly, did not say you wuzz a wuzz, just da lime. And somebody correct me if I am wrong (and I know they will).. but it is my understanding most of the imported beers (anything no brewed in Curacao) contains a preservative, which vaguely tastes like formaldehyde..but then again, drinking enough beer wil preserve anybody.

Amstel is brewed in Curacao.

By Kelly Lott (Experienced BonaireTalker - Post #538) on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 - 3:44 pm: |
I have not personally tasted formaldehyde, so I must refrain from opining.

I brew my own beer and have brewed with a brewmaster at a local Brewpub and know several people who are in the brewing business and have never heard of any preservatives used. Hops in themselves are a natural preservative and with filtering techniques and flash pasteurization there is very little need for a preservative.

Barry, I think that is why Michael brews his own beer...he knows exactly what's in it! LOL! C.K...you have me worried now...ewwww!

In my home brew club we have 17-20 certified beer judges and we review different styles every month. There is no classification on the judging sheet for "to much preservative". More than likely someone got some skunky beer and thought the flavor was supposed to be there and just attributed it to preservative. The "skunk" in skunky beer comes from a chemical reaction when the hops are exposed to light, that is why beer is usually bottled in dark bottles. Then you ask what about Amstel Bright and the others that are in clear bottles. Those brewers use a hop oil instead of the loose, plug or pellatized hop and the specific chemical that causes the skunk is no longer there.

the amstel from curacao is made from de-salinated sea water and is very fresh and very tasty - can be made as cold as you like and is a nice "clean" buzz - 'specially after a couple of dives...

Chet ... I had no idea about you and the beer -- now I am really looking forward to February! Will we have time to sample the local SJ beer when we meet before our Bonaire flight?? Kelly ... love the picture -- my kind of vacation shot -- have a few of those from lots of places with lots of local brews! I knew this thread would get fun!

Chris you are a thoughtful wife. Mine could learn a thing or two from you. The next time in Bonaire I'm bring a six pack of 24 oz. MGD to start before the Amistels kick in. Love Bonaire but prefer an all American like MGD!
