We'll be going to Bonaire in July. I have not been asked to show my log book to anyone for years. However, on a recent trip to the Bahamas, we were asked to bring and present it to the dive operation in Freeport. My husband and I have over 100 dives a piece, and I have kept track of each one - mostly through photographs and my dive journal. However, I have not been good about logging all of my dives. I suppose I could go through all my photo albums and travel journals.

Like I said, UNEXSO in the Bahamas made such a big deal about it that we brought it along. Since then, I have made quite a few more dives I have not bothered to log in. If I don't need it, I'd rather not bring it. We'll be staying/diving at the Divi. Any input on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Suzi

Suzi,

In all the years I've been diving with their operation, they have never asked for my dive log. You will need your c-card and number and a credit card. Of course, you will need to fill out a form with medical and emergency contact information, etc. You will be given an orientation brief.

Have fun!

Joann

Dive Log? You don't need no stinkin' dive log!
Seriously, a few years ago they started to ask for logs at Sunset house in Grand Cayman, so the next guy comes in with a brand new logbook with three logged dives - starting at #5000! Yeah, he was wayyy smooth.
We were pretty good about logging the first several hundred dives, but it seems to be going by the wayside, the computer tracks them and gets uploaded, so unless we are doing a fish survey not much logging goes on anymore ( I have found that I can cross check the digital snaps with the dive log and see exactly how deep I was when I took each shot, handy for knowing the REAL depth of that seahorse/frogfish,sea hare.

It's in my computer at home. I don't think it will boot with the power there so I am not bringing it...;)

Thanks...that's what I was hoping to hear. I have not bothered recording all our dives, but probably could if I had to.

All the same, one less thing to pack and worry about.

Thanks.

I make it a point to log in all new divesites that I dive but not if they're repeated. All my training dives are recorded and also any special dives that are done for some special reason. But usually the same old quarries and lakes neither get logged... I know what I did and that's all thats count for me but I always carry the logbook with me when traveling to distant places, just in case.It doesn't take up much room...

I've been diving in bonaire for 18 years and have never been asked for a log book (good thing, I quit logging dives 20 yrs ago)...18 yrs ago they didn't even always ask for a C card. Now, all resorts will ask for your card and require you to sign a waiver. Although I have never figured out what value the waiver serves.

Gregg~

Once while diving aboard the "Pirate's Lady" of Blackbeard's I overhead a young woman tell her husband to sign the damn waiver "a good lawyer could break it in no time". Later during that week I found out she was an attorney for a law firm. Since then, I sign them with a smile on my lips.

Besides our dives we log our favorite places to eat and favorite meals. You think you will remember everything but it fades over time.

Jim,

I think that was my point...I don't think people can abdicate liability ...at least in the U.S. I understand Bonaire laws are somewhat squirrely... of course there is that oxymoron "good lawyer"

My wife and I always fill out a dive log. Not just so we can prove this or that, but because it's fun.

We really like being able to look back and "re-live" a special dive. Or review a site we've been to before, figure out how much lead I used last time, see if we made more dives this trip than last.

I usually write a short description of conditions and what I saw. My wife goes into all kinds of detail, with little hand drawn pictures and sketches.

Next dive number 230, but who's counting........
