My husband and I are preparing for our first trip to Bonaire at the end of this month and we were wondering if anyone knew of a good book that described the dive sites, their location, their ease of entry and exit, which boat dives were the best, where to see certain types of coral and/or marine life, etc.

We considered ordering a book called Diving Bonaire but it was written some time ago and thought there might be a better book to consider.

There's a great small book written by Jesse Armacost (who lives on Bonaire) called Bonaire Shore Diving made Easy. It should be readily available in dive shops and other places on Bonaire and is great for shore diving information. It's pretty up to date.

The Diving Bonaire book I got before my first trip in 1999 is pretty out of date/no longer accurate. As far as boat dives go, there are so many good ones --- ask at your dive shop for recommendations, depending on what you want to see. I dont' think there are any bad sites.

I can also recommend the Jesse Armacost book ( costs 10$) its locally produced and covers only the shore diving , but its much better and more useful than the other glossy books costing a lot more . It was more or less upto date only exception seemed to be that Punt Vierkant is still listed as a shore dive (which it is not).

I expect its only available on the island itself.
we got our copy at the Carib inn, but saw it at several other shops .

Bethany--
If you intend to do more than shore dive, the Dive Bonaire book you're considering is probably a good bet. Shore diving on Bonaire is outstanding, but there are many dives, especially way south, north, and on Klein that are only accessible by boat and are very worthwhile. You've probably already surfed around the Bonaire Talk web site and found the section on the various dives and their locations.
Also, most dive shops have literature regarding local dives. Here's a web site that you may find to be useful. http://www.scubadivingbooks.com/
As many know, some of the dive sites on the northwest of Klein and out of the lee of Klein on the main island were damaged by the storm surge of Hurricane Lenny several years ago. While the damage goes to about 30 feet in depth, these sites are few and already beginning to show signs of recovery, and there are still very many outstanding sites that sustained no damage. There are no poor dive sites on Bonaire.
