I'll be there in mid-July: what kind of water temperatures can I expect? Also, I'm thinking about buying gear specifically for this trip (I'm a relatively new diver with no gear, not even my own mask;). Good idea?

Have a look at the thread "Renting gear". I would agree with those who say your own mask fins and boots are very much worth buying. For the rest, if you intend to dive regularly the more of your own equipment you have the better (tanks and weights excepted of course) It's easier to dive with equipment you know.

By all means purchase a good quality mask that fits you well. Nothing ruins a great diver faster than a leaking/uncomfortable mask. I perfer the soft neoprene straps, they don't pull your hair as bad and just plain feel better to me. Many dive stores will let you try before you buy and if you can find a store that will let you, then do it so you are sure the mask you have works well for you. I would also invest in a pair of HARD soled booties, the rocks on Bonaire can be rough on the feet. The other equipment can be rented if you like. While you are at the dive store, a snorkle might be a wise investment as well.

You will find some really good advice about how to buy a mask that fits in the essays on "Bruce's Pages" at the Carib Inn web site. I think it is www.caribinn.com, or you can get there by clicking on it when their ad appears in the sponsor banner on this website.

The gear at Dive Bonaire looked pretty good. I'd go with heavy duty booties and good mask as a minumum. Water temperatures over July 4th week were 82 day time and 79 night time. I dove in a skin only most of the time and swim suit only in the afternoons. As an istructor, I haul gear every where I go, but I'd rent on the first trip if I were you, rather than get in a hurry and buy stuff you don't like or need.

How are the prices in Bonaire? I am definitely going to buy a mask and booties, at least. Would I be better off buying gear in Puerto Rico (where I'll be the week prior to Bonaire)?

Buy mask, fins, and booties at home.
