As a Bonaire first timer in April, I'm curious about the dive sites in the national park. I've read they are difficult and tough to get to. Do any dive boats go there?...Are they worth trying to get to?...

Bill,

Make sure you check with the local dive shope on conditions. We drove all the way to one of the northern sites (the name escapes me) and had to leave because of massive surf. Drove all the way down the the south end (Red Slave) and it was great. Generally, the south and north ends have the most currents and hazards, but depending on the day, things can change.

If you get around into the Slaagbai portion of the park you should be just fine.

Have a great trip!

Michael

i don't think anybody recently has been raving about dives in that area...there are marked dive sites (one at slaagbai doesn't look that bad) - maybe the plan should be focused more on site seeing and picnicing in the park area with maybe just a "cool-off" dive (or snorkel/swim) at one of the sites...

guess the northern portion of the island was more exposed to the lenny waves and well...

Bill: Last October we dove PLAYA BENGE in Washington Park. There was some surf but not a show stopper. The site itself was outstanding and I highly recommend it to you. True, it can be an adventure getting there but we made it with minimum hassle in a Toyota rental pickup truck. Driving through the park was good stuff in my opinion and we plan on diving other northern sites this October. Have a great dive!

Diving sites in the park used to be the highlight of our trip..but since storm, damage has made it a different reef...some boats will go to the reef for extra charge, check with your dive operator..we still love the drive tru the park(think off road Arizona) and found the snorkeling EXCELLENT at Wiaaka II site new steps have been made..a perfect little lagoon..take your lunch there instead of Playa Funchi where the iguannas have been "fruitful and multiplied "...always bring water and something to sit on to cushion the bumpy ride..ladies..I suggest a support bra!
