In preparing for our trip, we are reading a few of the diving guides for Bonaire.

Could someone explain what the differences are between beginner, intermediate, and advanced dives as they pertain to Bonaire?

Thanks,

Paul

i think they are mostly referring to:

depth
current
entry point

the deeper, or the more current, or the more bizarre the entry, the dive is considered more advanced

obviously, we lose a little of our objectivity with experience but there are not to many dives that seem out of reach for a beginner to me (on bonaire)

I agree with Bob. When I spent a vacation with 2 novice divers, about the only dive they couldnt do was the Hilma Hooker which was too deep for their level of certification. Most other dives even if the dive guide on the boat went deeper we could stay shallow

Paul,

some sites on the south/east side, like Willemstoren and Lac Cai, can be difficult due to strong current and wave action. But this will be obvious before entering.

Hi Paul,

Just one person's subjective view, but as certified lazy old fart I would consider any of the sites from about Salt Pier on the South to Oil Slick on the North to be within the ability of a beginner/intermediate diver. The terrific thing about Bonaire is that if the site you've planned to visit looks uncomfortable for any reason when you get there, there's another one just a minute or two away as an alternate. And the simply superb fish life and coral found in relatively shallow water <60fsw makes it just ideal for all skill levels to enjoy. If you are staying at a shoreside full amenity resort, like Carib Inn, Divi, Sand $, Buddy, Lion's or Capt Don's to name just a few of the larger ones, you will find access to a VERY nice "house" reef just a walk down a flight of stairs at their pier away from 24/7 diving pleasure. Most of the reefs start at about 25fsw and slope off rather gently to the sand at about 115fsw so it's super easy to pick your comfort depth end slowly explore the macro world of Bonaire.

You are going to love it! Pack your sense of humor, sense of adventure and common sense and have as full an experience as you can.

Thanks everyone for providing your insight.

with most of our open water diving having been in Cozumel (about 52 dives), we were used to that area's ratings (depth and current related).. it is nice to know that the same criteria apply elsewhere!

Paul
