I've been going to Bonaire annually since 1992 and one of my favorite sites was Nukove. But since the "Big Surge" and the bad reports in BT, I have not been back. My question. Is anyone diving there and is it worth going back? Is there access to the reef through the rubble?

it was pretty damaged in dec 2000...lots of sand still on stuff - just a single entry point on the rubble pile to the left of the beach...

Nukove's fun little channel is long gone as is all the elk and stag horn coral in the shallows. It was simple flattened by the surge. There was signficant damage to the reef down to below 20 metres. It is recovering but not in our lifetime will it be the dive site it was. As Bob pointed out it is still a great place to chill, so long as the limpi's (flying teeth) are not out or you have plenty of bug repellant.

I dove Nukove for the first time last Oct. My buddy had been their before the storm damage and he was keenly aware of the damage in the shallows. Getting in the water was tricky because you had to walk to the southern end of a coral rock beach (about 50 feet) with plenty of opportunities to twist an ankle. After finning out to the bouy the drop off at was quite nice. We went north into the current to 1500psi then back to the bouy. The hard corals were nice and saw a Rainbow Parrotfish as well as the usual wonderful fishlife. The path from the parking area to the rubble pile beach is tricky as well as the footing on the rock pile until you are in the water. I hope to revisit Nukove on my visit to Bonaire in March. The beauty of the area as well as the seclusion make it worth the tricky entrance to the water.

Lou - We too have been diving Bonaire at least once a year since the early '90's and, like you have avoided Nukove since Lenny. Greatly saddened by the above responses. Guess it does make you more greatful for the sites that managed to escape damage or to at least begin regaining some of their previous beauty. Also reminds you that on occassion, Mother Nature is a nasty mother. Here's hoping Nukove is reincarnated in another lifetime.

I dove it the first time in Aug. Nukove is cool because its different. Dont get me wrong, the whole place is d-e-a-d, but that makes it something new. Everything is the same color and nothing looks like coral at all. The coral skeletons are like rocks now. Its Bonaire's moon dive.
