I’m an avid, if recently dry, fish watcher. My husband and I will be vacationing in Bonaire July 21st through the 27th and I was wondering if anyone else wants to join us in a fish identification dive or two.
Gordon and I are experienced divers, but now only get to dive a few times a year (that’s what happens when you move north from Florida). We did a REEF Survey course last year but I’m still better with pictures than the real thing. Gordon doesn’t do intense ID work, but performs the important jobs of watching out for me when I get way too engrossed in IDing and spots those turtles while I’m focused on 1 inch fish.
We’re doing the Drive and Dive special through Buddy Dive and will be doing mostly shore diving. We’ve been to Bonaire before, and have some ideas about where we want to dive, but can be flexible.
Any experienced Bonaire fish watchers out there want to show off their favorite underwater wildlife? Or are there any novice ID’ers with good dive skills (and a sense of humor, please) who want to join us on a dive in July? I’d love to get someone else hooked on fish watching!

I found out last night that Bonaire will be hosting a portion of REEF's Great American Fish Count (GAFC)during the entire month of July. We're talking free fish ID seminars and weekly group I.D. dives. Check out http://www.fishcount.org/events/events.html#seminars
Great way to meet other fishwatchers, learn more about fish and (if you do survey dives) add to the research database REEF maintains. I know the sponsor is a commercial company, so I hope I'm not stepping on any toes posting this, but the GAFC itself is research and education oriented.

Greetings, We were just in Bonaire and met a wonderful Marine Biologist -Caren Eckrich of Sea & Discover. She runs a children's program in the morning and and adult program in the afternoon. Our 8 year old daughter loved the program and participated 5 mornings. Caren also guided a twighlight dive for the Dive Festival and I talked with divers who went with her and loved it. She is extremely knowledgable. Her addresses: www.seandiscover.com or info @seandiscover.com Have fun. We can't wait to return. --DK

Lynn, be sure to try and get to Small Wall dive site although its kinda difficult from shore. There is a small "cave" at the bottom of the wall. The cave is only about 10 to 12 feet into the wall and big enough for 1 person to swim into and turn around or 2 people to swim into and back out. There were 1 or 2 Black Brotula's living there when I was there in February. Nice fish to add to you lifetime list.

As of last week there was still one Black Brotula in residence in the little cavern (a cavern being where you can see external light, vs. a cave where it be dark, very dark).
