might just be a bit of a crap shoot...apparently,
bonaire can be subject to upswells that are chilly and reduce vis a little bit...i did see it on my june 1-7th 2002 trip...the dec trip i think the water was warm and i had 150' vis or something;)

not much to worry about though in general - bonaire truly is the most dependable dive site imaginable ;)

I would never consider Bonaire as "crowded" in any way....nothing like other Caribbean islands or water destination spots. That is one of the many great charms of Bonaire....very laid back and quiet. I believe there are only approximately 10,000 to 13,000 folks living on the island and a lot less tourists at any one time, for sure! Not one traffic light, either. Nothing like Aruba or the Bahamas, etc. You will simply fall in love with her beauty and simplicity at the same time...not to mention the best snorkeling and diving waters around. Bonaire is not a plush island like Hawaii or some of the VI's....it is desert terrain with cactus, rocks, goats, donkeys, iguanas and absolutely breathtaking waters. Not to mention the greatest people on earth live there. I guess I like Bonaire, eh?! Carole

Michael...I just checked your profile. You will be in for a treat as I am certain Bonaire is very different from Tacoma, Wa. The anticipation is so exciting, isn't it? I recall what I went through before our first trip to Bonaire...sort of like waiting for Santa to arrive on Christmas (as a kid, of course! LOL. Bring lots of film and a fish ID book and sun block and plan to have a very relaxing but yet exciting trip. We leave in May and I can't wait, too. Carole

michael, i am from southern california, and you will love bonaire. even if the vis drops to 100 ft...you will still love it...bob is right, "bad" conditions on bonaire still kick cold water low vis conditions anyday! we are hoping to be there from june 3rd to june 17...also, click on this link, there are quite a few folks that will be there in may and june. scroll down to martin's last spreadsheet attachment and you can see who will be there the same time you will...oh, and you are sure to meet some nice people:-)

May June visitors

Michael,

I am usually at the Divi most years in mid June and the water temperature tends to run about 81-82 F (27C). We always dive with only a skin. In 2002 in mid July, the water temp was 78-79...very cold...Since we were expecting warmer water, we didn't bring anything besides 1/2 mil suits... by September, the temp was normal and up to 83 F. I'v been going to Bonaire over 15 years and feel the 2002 temperature was an aberration.

For you "oldtimers" on the board (like me, Niki, Jake, etc) just wanted to let you know that there is some good news for the May/June crowd....Jim and Lorraine Barnes are trying to firm up two weeks on Bonaire for the end of May/beginning of June 2003! Can't wait to see them in the water again. I have sent a note to Martin...just in case! Carole
